Description of a global health problem underlying a UN Millennium Development Goal
United Nations Millennium Development Goal six – Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. The aim is to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. This disease has reached pandemic proportion. 2012 estimates reveal that 35.3 million are infected with HIV internationally.New HIV infections yearly amount to 2. 3 million, which has significantly been reduced by approximately 1 million since 2001. An estimated 16.8 million of all HIV cases are women 3.4 million less than 15 years of age.1.6 million deaths have occurred in 2012, pushing the peak down from a 2.2 million in 2005 (Hel, McGhee & Mestecky, 2006).
Description of the history of the global health problem underlying a UN Millennium Development Goal is described.
The history underlying this global health problem alerting the attention as aUN millennium development priority/goal can be traced to poor countries’ populations that have been severely reduced nearly to extinction form HIV/AIDS infection. Sub-Sahara Africa has been mostly affected by deaths occurring from HIV/AIDS infection. In 2010 68% (22.9 million) of all HIV/AIDS cases came from this region, which was associated with 66% (1.2 million) of all HIV/AIDS deaths during that period (Hel et.al, 2006)
Consequently, UN Millennium Development Goal six attempts to address extreme poverty occurring in poor nations suchas Sub-Sahara region by designing strategies the that are expected to reduce thespread of HIV/AIDS through universal primary education for such poor nations by 2015. A blueprint was established by consensus from deliberations of all the world’s countries and related leading development institutions. Techniques have been structured to meet the needs of the poorest countries internationally making access to medication/treatment available (United Nation’s 8 Millennium Development Goals, 2014).
Identification of strategies/plans for accomplishing the UN Millennium Development Goal
There are three levels of techniques designed for targeting classified as target 6A, 6B & 6C. Target 6A specifically addresses the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 through massive education and access to screening as well astreatment. High risk groups are persons age 15-24. Target 6B hopes to achieve universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it by 2010. Malaria and other disease are targeted by Target C. The goal here is to stop incidences of malaria and other major diseases by 2015 (United Nation’s 8 Millennium Development Goals, 2014).
Application of evidence-based transcultural nursing contribution to the chosen UN Millennium Development Goal and promote the health and well-being of the many diverse and often vulnerable populations of the world is described.
Since these goals have been designed nurses have gone to work in executing their duties in making their transcultural nursing contribution to fulfill their role. For example, the 21st International Nursing Research Congress, held yearly through the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) pledged to advance evidence based research and practice in alignment with UN goal to reduce HIV/AIDS spread across the world. Forty countries were represented at the conference. In specifically addressing goal six “A Qualitative Study of Hospital-Based HIV Clinics in North Central Nigeria,” “A Healthcare Referral System for the Homeless” and “A Comparison of Sexual Practices of Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Female College Students” were the evidence based material offered for review at the forum (Sigma Theta Tau International, 2010).
Besides, these interventions measures have been taken across the globe to sensitize citizen about the dangers of promiscuity especially, teenagers; drug users and other high risk groups. More drugs even though very costly have been made available for poor countries to treat person already infected. Besides, persons are encouraged to come forward and be tested if exposed to the virus through sexual intercourse or drug use.
