Mobile Phones in College Campuses, Should They Be Allowed
Over the past century, technology has transformed human life as we know it. As human beings, we have developed and engineered tools and implements that have made work and life easier in many ways, affecting all facets of human life. One such facet in education. Education is by far one of the most important facets of human life and development. Through education, information and knowledge in disseminated from one generation to another creating the need to discover and research to create new knowledge. Technology has, over a considerable span of time, transformed the processes involved in education for both the student and the instructor. This paper will critically look into the ways in which education is changing education for both the student and the instructor.
The ever evolving and developing world of technology, gave birth to the cellphones, these gadgets revolutionized communication. Cellphones have become an everyday tool of necessity and it is arguably a must-have device for every individual in the civilized and industrialized world. The debate on whether to allow cellphones in institutions of higher learning has been one that has generated overwhelming reviews from parents, teachers and students. Personally, I strongly believe cellphones should be permitted in college campuses, and even high schools.
Mobile phones have in the past been branded as one of the major instigators of distractions in a student’s academic life. However, with each passing day, evidence to the contrary is exposed, through better innovations in the cellphone industry and the changing society. In recent times, child safety has been a key issue in institutions of higher education. Cases of kidnappings and shootouts within and around schools have fueled the need for students in college campuses to possess mobile phones. A survey by the Pew Research Survey organization showed that most abductions take place between the school exit and the bus stop. Many of these kidnappings could be averted should students identify suspicious characters following them and call or text an adult to come to their aid.
Social media has become the trending way of communication, with some experts predicting it could even wipe out the use of e-mail. Teachers could use social media and chatting with students as a great tool for communicating exams, homework and other important academic matters. Parents could also utilize it as a tool of keeping up and monitoring their child’s social affairs.
All over the world, books can only be accessed through two ways; by either purchasing the desired book from a bookshop or by reading or borrowing it from a library. This requires one to spend considerable time, money and effort to achieve this fete. However, the internet has made it so much easier to access the desired information. Through the internet, one can access limitless amount of information as compared to the library or bookshop. The internet is by far the largest library of information on the surface of the planet. All this information is accessible by simply searching for the desired content using one of the numerous search engines.
According to statistics, as of 2013, 39% of the 7.1 billion people in the world have access to the internet. This is in huge contrast to the 15% of the world’s population that have access to a public library. Using these facts as a guide, it would appear that many individuals do have access to eBooks as compared to the traditional hardcopies. This shows that in the 21st century, it is far much easier to access an online eBook library as opposed to a traditional book library
Mobile phone applications have made it possible to download and read entire books, known as e-books. According to experts, mobile phones and tablets could soon replace books as they are compact and could wield thousands of volumes of reading materials. This makes cellphones a great academic tool.
So, should mobile phones be allowed in college campuses? Yes, but under certain rules and regulations that can be agreed between parents and teachers. They are great social and academic tools as much as they improve security of children in college campuses.
