Arriane is a 21 year old Latina working in a small convenience store as a cashier. There are currently two cashiers working in shifting schedules for the store. This is the reason why it is very important that both cashiers appear on their schedule shift to take their assigned duties. There is a rule regarding acquiring absences such as mentioning the said matter at least a day before the actual day of not attending one’s duty. In case of emergency at least three hours before one’s duty is required for the adjustment of time for the other cashier to take over before the owner comes along and takes the shift himself.

For the past three days, several adjustments of shifting on the schedule of the other cashier has been incurred due to Arriane’s constant absences. For the fourth time, certain action needed to be taken into consideration.

Here’s where you are: Arriane, we value your contribution to the growth of this business. That is the reason why we placed you as one of the cashier-tellers. We believe that you can take the job and you are responsible enough to be trusted with the said position. However, for the past three days, you have been calling for your abrupt absences and we find ourselves in an uncanny position to just accept what happened and respond to the matter. We would like to let you know that this is not an acceptable practice on your part as the employee.  Is there anything bothering you?

Here’s where you need to be: Given that you are currently dealing with family issues, we do feel for you. We realize that it is really hard to complete one’s duties when particular issues on family relations arises. However, we would like to know if you are still serious about your job with us; because if you are, then some adjustments should be made.

We obviously cannot do much to solve your family issues; however, we might be able to help you in consideration with how you deal with matters here at work. In relation to this, we propose that we adjust your schedule in an agreement with you of course.

How are you going to get there? We strongly feel that if an adjustment is pursued then you would be able to concentrate more at work and deal with your family issues as well. This approach would allow you separate the issues you deal with at home with the duties you have to complete here at work. This could only be done if the time adjustments are to be followed fully. We hope you would agree to this matter. Because otherwise, we would have nothing else to choose but to let go of you to avoid anymore issues in relation to the position you are holding every time you make absences.
