For Mohamed Mounir, the Sea and surroundings represent freedom to love and create human relationships. In “I Love the Sea”, written in the 1970-s, the sea, the road, and the sky are representing the lover. Sea is accepting, just like a lover. It is filled with patience and appreciation, just like the lover of the songwriter. The sea is both close and distant, and human relationships can be just like that. In one moment, one would think that they are so close to one person, and then they notice that the other has different views of the world, and they feel alone. Still, the songwriter states that he loves the sea, just like he adores his lover.
Born in Aswan, the artist combines traditional Arabic music with modern rhythm, and reflects on his own life as well as the events of the world. The artist grew up in a village that was later displaced because of the building of the Aswan Dam. His feelings towards change are represented in the contrasts he draws in the lyrics of “I love th Sea”. He also mentions “migrating and traveling” reflecting on the changes of the outside world, as well as emotions of humans. People can be tender, or crazy, full of rage or silence. But this is just a part of life; something that needs to be accepted, loved, and appreciated.
I chose this song because it is about something every human can relate to: love. It shows a quiet, peaceful life where people accept each other, changes, and differences. For me, the song is not only about lovers’ relationship, but also interpersonal relations: with people we meet “on the road” and in every aspect of life.
The plot of the song is based on the singer/songwriter confessing his love to his partner. It also explains why he loves her and how natural this love is.
One of the main themes of the song is acceptance and forgiveness: the artist states: “ “Because, like you, it’s forgiving”. Considering that the “King” has been known for a decade for working towards peace and understanding in the world, and in 2002 created an album reflecting on the 9/11 attacks entitled “El Salam” or Peace, it is clearly visible that the song is not only about human relationships on a personal level, bu world peace and tolerance, as well.
As a conclusion, the song is about acceptance, love, appreciation, and forgiveness: it is something every person can relate to. The song also highlights the importance of nurturing human relationships and accepting others.
