Motivation and Its Application in Organizations, Essay Example

Essay

The chapter (Chapter 5) talks about different theories that can help companies and managers design a compensation system that increases employees’ motivation level. Reviewing the Expectancy Theory, Goal Setting Theory, Equity, and empowerment ideologies is important to understand how employees can be made to “want to achieve” good outcomes. For me, all the theories seemed to be valid and useful, however, the use of empowerment is the one that I can relate to the most.

I believe that employees “with high level of self-determination” can have a higher level of intrinsic motivation. However, to get there, one needs to be empowered through education, support from the company and managers, as well as motivated to advance their career. This is the reason why I believe that one of the best motivation methods companies can engage in is career support and personal development. While the effectiveness of bonuses and rewards has been proven to be high, for the long term, job satisfaction is more important. People who work in roles they are competent in, and believe in the positive impact of their jobs will be generally more motivated than those who have no choices or development opportunities.

From Table 5-3 I found recognition awards and profit sharing the most effective long term motivation tools. Indeed, people would have a sense of achievement upon receiving their compensation. They would feel like they are moving in the right direction, and are creating benefits for both themselves and the company.

The authors also talk about the connection between motivation levels and commitment, which is important to keep in mind when designing compensation systems. Setting goals that are aligned with the person’s career and personal objectives would result in a higher level of motivation.

The main takeaway of the chapter for me is that all managers should keep in mind that motivation has an impact on individual performance, and – as a result – the overall performance and effectiveness of the company’s operations.
