Commitment and Focus on the Roads to Success
Life has never tolerated laziness, not even anyone’s comfy character. As youths, the desired life is determined by the effort you inject in ensuring your goals are gradually achieved from step to step towards the final destination. A life guided by a lack of self-commitment, dependence on people, lack of a plan, and limited focus is bound to return the equivalent results to an individual sooner than late. It is, therefore, the perspective employed on the roads to success, the plans you put forward, commitment, and tenacity all invested in one course that propels you to achieve your desired future.
I had just cleared my O level exams when my dad lost his job. At the moment, my elder sister was at her second-year college, pursuing her first degree. My two younger brothers were in high school. It had just happened at a point when the government had reviewed the school fee for grades two and three months before I wrote my final exams! Life often depended on his little savings of the past fifteen years of work, and few errands mum and dad ran around the town. But owing to my grandmother’s marriage to the hospital bed for a complete one year with severe complications before discharge on financial incapability, we expected nothing much from him. Yes, nothing much! And so, my education was a non-issue. Of course, I had done my O levels, and following the tradition, our peasant neighbors had set of the hustle and hard work; my growth was abandoned to my two hands and the O level brain.
On this day, I had just felt stomach complications early hours of the morning, the condition had sporadically grown unbearable, and I could not resist seeking a physician’s assistance. After going through medical remedy at the nearby clinic, drama almost ensued at the time of discharge due to non-clearance with the accounts. Of course, we have all along used dad’s medical cover, so medication had never been an issue until he was relieved from the job. Money was just so inadequate, and we thereby had to make commitments after some disagreements. Two days after the hospital drama, and upon relief, the older man called me. He was sitting at his normal place; He would always sit here whenever a touching announcement was pending. And the moment I saw him under the tree shade, the ‘supreme court’ as we would call it, I knew something pressing and urgent had to be resolved. “Listen, son, and listen carefully,” he started. It was the story of Grahams. Mr. Light Bulb, as I would refer to him due to his bald head, was left an orphan at the age of seventeen with nothing to inherit and no life to enjoy. But that never marked the end of his future. Being futuristic, he believed that the fruition of one’s ambition and desire squarely relied on his mental strength, brain, and his hands. He had started at as unskilled mason but now owns two two-star hotels. From the entire tales, it was clear, my education was not anywhere in his plans, and it was high time I get productive!
The county hall was getting thick and thick as minutes counted. This was a project by the federal authority to establish a common place where casual laborers could easily assemble and meet potential employers. Unemployment and the poor state of the country were well defined here. People crowded every morning, Monday to Saturday, for manual jobs. Of course. Fate depended on two facets, first come first serve or the rapport you had built with your previous employer. Of course, cloaking was mandatory, and the job was allocated in that order, not unless the boss had particular desires depending on the nature of duty. It was my second day in the ‘office,’ and following the commitment I had depicted the previous day, Mr. Owens, the boss who got pleased with my work, had come to fetch other comrades and me. By 8.30 hours, we were driving the previous site. Our workstation looked like an archive, abandoned, dusty with stuffy smells from old newspapers and bunches of scattered envelopes. Our job was to sort the documents according to the date and fix them in a new package, and we would, after that, drill the walls and reconstruct decent shelves for the documents.
At the place, payment was so reliable, but only in terms of time. Nothing much was expected to be carried home. We were paid only three dollars after a tiresome nine hours, well, so discouraging, but at least, I could carry some food home! Days after hit and miss at the hall, we held a conversation with my friend Bradley; we have been reliable members of the hall, six months down the line, our lives had changed yet. Things seemed not right. Six months but not even a single new pant! It was time to take the next step. Thoughts crossed our minds, and at some points, we deliberated to clear the week as we awaited our payment, and go our ways. Go our ways? Empty-handed again? The idea was brilliant, but it lacked reasonability. I have been loyal alumni of my dad’s philosophy of ‘whenever you go out for a mission, never return the same way, always make a change, wherever you are or on yourself.’ After a long day of work and while waiting for orders to wind the day, I thought of something. We were to dedicate another new month at the hall, but this time around, work double shifts. After the closure of the routine schedules, we would head to a local restaurant where we would earn four dollars per day as direction stewards. In a week, we saved proceeds from four days’ sweat, use the other earnings for routine survival.
The race had been set. We worked under a strict schedule for one month. We were set to acquire a cereals store around a local mall with our proceeds. Of cause setting such a store was not a simple plan due to the capital base it demanded. But, at least, that was the direction. At the collapse of the fourth week, we had gathered our $224. We were $136 shy of our target. But due to the overlapping days in the final weeks of the month, we had to continue with slavery. Five more days to hit the weekend payday. Ultimately, we had $308 at our disposal. Convinced that the right time to face our world had ripped, we left.
One week later, we had already established a cereals shop. Though with seemingly inadequate capital, we had to acquire some stock on pledges and after-sale returns agreement. We had to do a rapid sales activity, seeking tenders from nearby hotels, schools, and local homes. More tasking days appeared upon the raid by the local authority on licensing grounds, a thing that appeared like some setups. We waded through thick hurdles.
A time came when we almost closed down due to stocking following heavy fines we were condemned to by the local authorities. But our journey before could not propel us towards the direction. We had strained and suffered enough to make us retreat at this point. Why would we surrender? The MacGuffin was already looming, after all! It was not until the pursuit of the youth development funds previously released that we received a bailout with a biased consideration of our business as security and motivation to the allocation team.
The step saw us expand our business, increase stock, and open a subsidiary branch at some town distance from our local town. And as a matter of reality, we are developing a remarkable medium cereals supplier brand in association with a senior breweries firm. Furthermore, we eventually went to school, advance our studies and looking forward to some other inventions
Succinctly, look at the story, observe my testimony keenly. We had the will to give up. Proceeding and the spirit of surrender were all at our decision. I started almost from literally zero. It was a master plan that came across our minds. With determination and hard work, we sailed through tempting working conditions as casual workers, the thrashing by the local authorities, and just by the fact that at some point before we ventured into the business, we had insufficient capital. Success and progress are relative to the commitment to one’s target and aiming to turn things around. Not by sleeping on your ambitions or getting satisfied with very little struggle. Everyone can rise beyond the limits and tough times.
