Research hypothesis

After determining the area or the topic that you would like to study the next step in designing the experiment involves writing a research hypothesis. A hypothesis is derived from the research questions. Research questions indicate what the researcher is interested in? The research questions forms the base in which the hypothesis and null hypothesis are built (Rokeach, 2014).

In our example here, the study will seek to explore the tendency to work in groups. From the result of the descriptive study, or observation, there are more women than men working in project oriented groups. Some of the specific questions that this research will seek to answer are; how many women and men work in groups in a particular work place. How many women and men work in solitary projects? This will form basis of our hypothesis.

In order to measure, the qualities of the research topic the researcher define variables, which can be either dependant or independent.

In this study my hypothesis would be:

In the modern work place, more women work in groups than men.

The variables here are:

  1. independent variable-work place
  2. dependent variable – number of women and men

Correlation and descriptive designs

Correlation research measures the relationship between two variables (Aiken &West, 2011). One of the observation that I have made in most of the  workplaces is that  older and senior staff seems to  have more weight than young junior staff. To study whether there is any relationship between the age and weight of the staffs, I would develop a questionnaire that will seek to know the position, age, and weight of the staffs in different department. I will ensure that the question questionnaire is available online and then encourage staff from different department to fill it. Then I will analyze the data to determine whether there is relationship between ages an weight of the staffs.
