My Belief, Goal and Legacy, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 541

Essay

Like a bird with a broken wing, my life has been one of hopeless existence, having been separated from my parents at the tender age of five. Twenty one years in exile have not erased the bitter experiences of war in Sudan, my native home. Hell broke loose when the merchants of death, beating their war drums, marched down from Khartoum in the north to Darfur in the south, to supress a people oppressed for years and who were fighting for self governance.

However, I believe that we determine our destiny by confronting challenges and fighting for one’s rights. Like the black slaves fighting for their place in America during the civil war, I believe that the aggrieved people of South Sudan will one day find their day of justice, and break the chains of oppression that has enslaved them to the north for many decades. The wind of revolution that swept across the Arab world, from Egypt to Tunisia, form Iraqi to Syria, is testimony that the common man will always rise up and fight back against tyranny. It is the same spirit of self-determination that shook the foundations of Khartoum’s dictatorship. While the world watched in silence, the nation was in labour: the fierce fighting in Darfur were the symptoms of a writhing pregnant woman experiencing labour pains, in readiness for the birth of a new nation. The child has been born, the Republic of South Sudan, and is now tottering in her first attempts to walk.

While I’m far away from home, I have great expectations of my country. With the eagerness of a child waiting for a gift-box to be unwrapped, I anticipate completing my studies and going back to share in nation-building. This is my long term goal, to get out of my comfort zone and take risks for the sake of my future and my country. In striving towards this goal, my short-term objective is to work hard and pass my exams to guarantee my entry into graduate school, and eventually pursuing a degree course. I hope to get a job soon after graduating to help me lay the foundation for even greater achievements in life. Finally, I intend to settle down and start a family, which I believe is the dream of all ambitious men.

Nevertheless, I look forward to leaving behind a rich legacy that will both inspire and encourage those who will walk in the path that my life has treaded. Having escaped from the jaws of death, overcame challenges in a foreign land and worked my way to success, I would like to be remembered for my respect to people from all walks of life and humble willingness to learn from others. Most important, I intend to be remembered for contributing in making the world a better place to live by promoting peace and literacy. Towards this end, therefore, I hope, if within my means, to establish a charity foundation to help orphans and the poor, besides taking my children through college. This is the life I want to live, the ambition I want to fulfill. For, to dream big is to widen one’s horizon, to nurse a resolution to achieve big things. My dream is big, my determination as solid as a rock.
