I could create my own country I would base it off of the ten commandments. From these truths I could build a country that was tolerant, moral, and economically productive while maintaining persons’ individual freedoms. I could build this country centered around the 10 commandments as the pillars of the country. Many people think that a society can not function when it is based on religious ideas, but thee truth is that many religious virtues are universal. The ten commandments can be applied to people of all backgrounds, religions and creeds. It is through the ten commandments that a country can achieve peace and prosperity.
Government
The government of this country would be extremely limited, only guaranteeing people their basic rights. We would draft a document very similar to the United States’ Constitution. The role of the government would be to preserve and protect the life, liberty, and property of its inhabitants. Everything else would be determined by people’s faith, morality, and the free market. As stated in the ten commandments, it would be illegal to murder someone. The reason there would be a free market is because socialism and the redistribution of wealth is a form of stealing, and is therefore immoral. In a more subtle intricacy in regards to law, people would not be allowed to lie, or commit perjury. Bearing false witness would be a very serious crime. This country would be founded on the premise that its people were generally honest and sincere, negating the need to lie or cheat.
Religion
Obviously, this country would have strong ties to the Judeo-Christian religion and tradition. However, this country would welcome and tolerate all forms of religious expression. This means that a person could drop down on their knees wherever and whenever, in a public place, or even at school, and pray to whichever God they worship. The commandments state that there should be “No gods before me” but that is not for the government’s job to decide. People would not be allowed to blaspheme other religions, or take any one else’s god in vain or slander. Religion is something between an individual and God, and so it is not the job of another person to dictate to someone else what they can and can not believe in.
Economy
The economy would be an entirely free market. Ideally, the family support system coupled with the ethics and tolerance of a country would allow people from having to go without food, shelter, and adequate health care. The economy would be protected by the government, people’s good would be protected. It would also be a country where goods were not coveted by others. This could be achieved by creating a “gladsome” society. Ideally, people would be taught to appreciate only what they had earned and not what they have been given. In this sense, people would be able to earn their own sense of self worth. That’s where the free market comes into play. A person would get to choose how much money they made by how hard he or she worked. This free market economy could work if the government did an adequate job of protecting people’s property. If someone committed fraud or stole goods from another person, then the government would intervene as an arbitrator.
Family
Families would be the center of the country’s moral and societal fiber. Children would be raised by their parents, and in the tragic event that a child’s parents would die, they would be put in the care of a close relative. Obviously, things like adultery and coveting your neighbors spouse would be considered highly immoral and in-conducive to the growth of a healthy family unit. Remembering the Sabbath day is one of the ten commandments, and it would be implemented within the family. This country would dedicate one day of the week (probably Sunday) to meditation and family time. This would create a spiritual sanctuary for a family where they could take time out of their lives to appreciate their family and spirituality. Keeping the Sabbath day holy would be a subjective ceremony that each family would decide for itself. Christians or Muslims, or people of other faiths could worship on this day. Atheists could as well, the purpose of this day would be for people to enjoy their families, take a break from work, and worship if they chose to do so.
Conclusion
Many people believe in the separation of church and state, believing that the founders of the United States warned against a combination of church and state. However, in fact the founders of the United States warned against a theocracy, not the inclusion of church and state. People today assume that an inclusion of church and state is incompatible with religious freedom and expression, but this is just not the case. In my country people would be able to practice their religion freely as long as it did not interfere with the three basic rights of life, liberty and property. Through the 10 commandments as guidelines, my country could guarantee its people life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
