My Dream Career, Essay Example

My career of choice is that of a county prosecutor. This is a job that brings with not only a lot of responsibility but also a huge workload. To get to this position I first need to meet the immediate qualifications that are required for one to do this job. First a county prosecutor ought to be a qualified attorney who is admitted to the bar of the respective county that they seek to operate. My short term goal therefore is to complete my undergraduate studies and attain the necessary legal qualifications. With the qualifications I will be able to pursue my dream and venture into the specialty of criminal justice therefore enabling me to undertake my duties as a county prosecutor successfully.

My dream to be a county prosecutor is formed from my family background. I was born to a police man father who was very dedicated to his work. All through my early childhood, my parents stressed to me the importance of being responsible and respecting myself as well as respecting the rights of others. I therefore learnt the need for fairness and justice at a very early age. I also learnt from my father the reason why law enforcement needs to be enforced and crime curbed as much as possible. Due to these influences in my childhood, I decided to take up law as a career and become a county prosecutor and play my part in the enforcement of law and the pursuit of justice.

My long term career objective is to succeed in taking the office of the county prosecutor after setting a good track record in criminal litigation. This I will be able to achieve by being a vociferous reader which will enable me review all cases brought to my attention to success and hence be able to prosecute cases successfully. To be able to achieve this, I will need to a job as a deputy count prosecutor which also requires a degree in law as well as admission to the bar (Web). For this I intend to serve in the office of deputy county prosecutor for not more than five years before seeking promotion to the higher office. Once I get into the office of the prosecutor, I intend to stay on for eight years before vacating office.

The salary and benefits are quite attractive though this is based on the general assumption that these jobs are well remunerated. The county prosecutor’s salary is also subject to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This means that I will be given a chance to negotiate their salary and benefits every two year (Schrunk, Web). This means that the salary is always adjusted to factor in the changes in the economy as well as factor in inflation to ensure that the employee’s welfare is well catered for. The job also provides for medical dental cover to cater for health needs of the prosecutor’s office staff. The prosecutor is also entitled to three weeks of paid leave for every one full year worked, besides being enrolled in a pension scheme of the county’s choice. The county in most also pays the bar dues for the prosecutor hence enabling the practice.

The first challenge I expect to face in my job either as a deputy county prosecutor or as a prosecutor is the work hours involved. In many instances case briefs and preparation are likely to be long and tedious and thereby forcing me to work more that forty hour weeks. This is likely to be a major challenge that I have to contend with. The other challenge that I will have to deal with is the delays and backlogs of cases that are common in the prosecutor’s offices. To deal with this I will have to engineer a change of attitudes as well as the work ethics at the county that I will be based. This will be geared towards creating a better service for the people. Employees are generally resistant to change (BPP p26). I will therefore need to win people into my way of thinking to enable me achieve this.

Much as the job might pose challenges as constraints, I believe in my ability to face and overcome these challenges. These will give me the impetus to work harder in order to leave a mark on the criminal prosecution scene. By seeking guidance from the more experienced individuals and collaborating with the members of staff, I will be at a position to learn fast and expedite cases with speed. It’s also these challenges that will get me into getting the best out of myself as a person and giving the best to the society.

The job will afford me the work life balance that I need due to the fact it’s a socially oriented job that will be putting me at a position to interact with many people in the society. The second reason is that, once I get to the position of prosecutor, I will have competent deputies working under me hence I will be able to organize for flexi hours when we are handling long and complex cases. This will therefore enable me have a good work life balance. I therefore believe that my dream job of being a county prosecutor will not only enable me practice law but also serve the community in a position where I will impact positively on the society.
