My Enrollment in College, Essay Example

During my enrollment in college, I have participated in a diverse range of professional development activities that will support my ability to become an effective foreign language teacher. It is important to become involved in professional development programs early so that I am able to constantly build my skills, understanding how to cater to the needs of my students. Two relevant workshops I have attended recently are the FLENJ technology workshop and the 2015 Speaking About World Languages Forum workshop at Monmouth University.

The FLENJ technology workshop helped me boost my teaching skills because it helped me build an understanding of technology use in the classroom. There is currently a lot of controversy over whether technology should be used at all in the classroom setting in addition to which types of technology should be permitted. After speaking to other language teachers from New Jersey, I gained an understanding of how technology can be used to gain a greater understanding of the cultures from which these languages derived in addition to incorporating gamification techniques.

The Speaking About World Languages Forum helped me develop the skills I gained at the first professional development session with regards to incorporating digital games into my lessons. Ultimately, it is important to engage students by making learning fun, and incorporating this type of technology will enable me to ensure that this will be the case. I believe that learning about these digital games will help my teaching efficacy because I will now be in a better position to recognize when students are having a hard time learning certain concepts and when these concepts would be better learned through playing a game.
