My Experience This Far With Theology, Essay Example

Every field of study has tension in definitions. However, for theology, the term itself is a tension. Such attributes to the fact that the term entails the study of God, who, no study has given a perfect description. When I went to Google to find the real meaning of theology, I concluded with saints’ sentiments that faith seeking understanding is the perfect way to practice theology. Therefore, I intend to attend this school to go deeper into the research and history of what it means for faith to seek understanding. My faith began seeking understanding one evening when I visited Nicole at their home where “God” was a household name.

The events of the evening remain daunting but yet very fulfilling. On this evening, I was superbly hungry, eagerly waiting for dinner. When the mother finally served dinner, I was determined to savor every bit of my serving. Without wasting time, I proceeded to eat. Everyone was shocked, and with equal measure, I was perplexed. Reflecting on how my parents raised us, there was no procedure to follow before eating. Nicole and her mother explained that before any meal, they say grace as a way of thanksgiving for the meal’s provision. I mumbled alongside since I did not have the slightest clue of what grace is. After dinner, the anxiety to know God enormously grew, and that is how I chose theology.

One would wonder how a person born in a family who regarded themselves as Christian cannot say grace.  Unlike Nicole, who grew up in a family that embraced church and went to catholic schools to strengthen her faith, I was raised in a family that did not acknowledge God. God was not a common term in our home. Occasionally, this term would come up, but only when daunting it for the misery that had befallen one of us. I did not know that God can provide, heal or was worthy of any praise. We did not go to church, but there was no open avenue to learn about God for Christmas. By the simple prayer at the dinner table, I wanted to know more about this. I wanted to know how to pray deep from my heart and not just words. The decision prompted me to dedicate my life to theology, illuminating how to construct a change in my family’s belief in God.

My journey at theology school has been challenging. As I expressed previously, we did not go to church but for Christmas. Besides, the topic concerning home was uncommon in our home. Talking about God was only for bashing reason on the misery that has befallen one of us. I also did not go to Christian schools to build the Christian faith that we professed as a family. Therefore, if I was determined to walk this journey, I needed to start from scratch. My professors have been an enormous pillar of support this far. For example, other than teaching me how to pray, they have imparted me to deep prayers instead of just words. They have illuminated my faith to seek much more understanding of God than my family, church, or Christian schools would. Today, if someone asked me what I intend to do with my graduate studies, I would have at least two answers. Firstly, I would let them know that at the end of this undergraduate program, I intend to proceed to graduate school to gain a deeper understanding of faith saints’ phrase “faith seeks understanding.” Secondly, I want to illuminate a change in people who profess Christian faith but do nothing to build it, like my family.

Citing from my childhood experience, some people will assume that I must have laid a different foundation for my daughters. It is, however, absurd that I have not. At this point, I would love to sit with my daughters and teach them about God, faith and the bible in general. Although I have achieved a significant milestone in building my faith and knowing God, I have not reached a comfortable zone for this topic. I, therefore, do not want that moment of shame that will come when my daughters ask a question regarding faith, God, or the bible, and I have nothing to give. I want to be at that point that I have confidence about these topics so that my daughters will be comfortable listening to my teaching. I want my daughters to have a robust theological foundation by the time they reach college. Such will help them have confidence when they look back and not have similar thoughts or feelings while writing this. Through this course, I am trusting God to enrich me with so much more in my life. I want to leave this class with a deep understanding of God, faith and the bible in general, and not mere classwork knowledge.
