It always fascinates me to go out with friends and family to watch movies in the cinema. Not only does the activity entertain us, but it has also become one of the most important bonding moments that we all enjoy to go through. After viewing the movie, we usually discuss the theme of the film at home and share our comments and opinions about what it has left us thinking about the characters, the plot and the settings used in the presentation. Usually, the most prominent individual to be regarded in each film is that of the director. The movie writer or the screenwriter often comes second in line. However, in my opinion, it lies on the capacity of the screenwriter to create a good story that the movie’s success is dependent upon. Relatively, I do believe that with the ideas that come from the screenwriter, several characters come to life and their individual characteristics become reflective of the people with whom the writer himself has been acquainted with through time. Apart from the director, the talent of the screenwriter in creatively formulating a story contributes so much on how the movies and their presentations are accepted by the public.
My interest on the work of a screenwriter has me getting into the idea of becoming one as well. I do believe that my forte in writing allows me to fit in the category of qualifications required from an aspiring writer. I found a reference material that discusses seven particular steps towards becoming a successful movie writer; and through examining these steps, I realized that screenwriting could actually be the right profession for me when I finally get out and find a career that does not only fit my qualifications but also fits my expectations and my interest as an individual.
The first step [as mentioned in the reading] is to practice habitual writing. Writing has always been my outlet for emotions that I usually keep inside me. I figured out that the lesser I talk, the lesser mistakes I make. However, it is also hard to keep myself at bay about issues that I really want to speak out about. Because I am not that outspoken, I find it hard to just tell anyone about how I feel about something or perhaps even share my opinion to others through immediate verbal communication. Hence, to balance things out, I found writing to be the best sort of outlet that allows me to burst out what I feel and think about without necessary undergoing confrontation or disagreements with others. It is through this approach that I find peace within myself. I do understand though that when it comes to screenwriting, personal writing procedures like the one I take into account when I write things in my journal, may be helpful but not necessarily directly essential. It is good practice, on the other hand, I could still further define my writing through exploring more topics and perhaps even writing about uncanny events thus putting in some structure into my presentation and becoming more involved on things that are not focused on myself but on others who may capture my interest.
The second step is the construction of a story. What do I want to tell the people about? This question shall serve as a relative guide as I formulate the different factors that will make up my movie story. I do believe that through rummaging through my old notes and putting in my experiences within the stories that I create would make the entire presentation more realistic. This approach however could only be used as a practice-type inspiration. For real stories to be released for movie production, I should be able to create stories that I know would relate to the audience I am trying to reach out to. It is an important factor to consider when writing a story to know how the writer wants to present his characters to the viewers. It is helpful if a writer could use a friend or another individual he knows to be the basis of his character thus making the fictional individual more realistic and easily relatable for the viewers’ understanding.
When creating a story, it is important to know that there is a beginning, a middle act and an ending to the story. When constructing the story for a movie plot, a screenwriter should recognize that the middle part should be able to raise the critical conditions thus retaining the interest of the viewers towards the end of the whole presentation. Constructing these acts in an organized manner could help me create a good story that might just be fitting for a movie production.
The third step is to learn the screenplay format. As I said earlier, I often practice writing through recording data on my journal. However, when it comes to screenplay writing, realizing that there is a specific format to follow shall allow me to become more aware of how I should formulate the presentation of the details of my story for the sake of the producers who would look through the whole portfolio. To help me through this, there is currently a software program that helps screenwriters create their story and put them in a format that the screen producers would be able to use for evaluation. Utilizing such program could provide me with the right assistance that I need to establish my skills in screenwriting.
The fourth step is to get professional assistance. True, I need to know and realize that although I am an experienced writer, there are more to learn and more to practice when it comes to perfecting the way of screenwriting for movies. There are film courses that could help me in developing my skills and directing them towards creating movies. Another way is learning under the direction of screenwriters themselves. Getting them to show me how they write, how they capture their ideas and put them into writing shall better inspire me and show me the rights steps I need to take in creating a more relatively definitive way of presenting my ideas and the stories that I want to bring forth to movie producers.
The fifth step is to get noticed. In the field of screenwriting, it is important for an aspiring writer like myself to have a portfolio. I could do this at present through creating a blog that would showcase my talent in writing. It shall also open me to possibilities of getting both positive and negative criticisms from my readers that could actually increase and improve the way I handle my writing and the way I present my ideas and my stories online. Why online? There are several readers through the internet; given that most of them do not know me, then they could be the best source of objective criticisms which I need. Also, the internet is an open outlet that publishers and movie producers usually look at for possible stories they might want to base their movies on; if I get noticed as much as needed, someone might actually find my stories interesting for a movie plot.
The sixth step is to get an agent. Although this step is already forwarded towards the future, knowing how to get the right agent to represent me and my story to movie producers would surely help me in becoming acquainted with the industry early on. I do believe that getting myself involved in research of the probable agents to represent me and my work could provide me the established foundation I need to let my work be known to others who have the ‘say’ in making movies into blockbusters.
The seventh step is to keep writing. Yes, embracing a profession like screenwriting is not a one-hit approach. It consists of patiently writing up several stories, one successful piece after another. This will allow me to become more involved in the process of training myself into creating plots that would be specifically interesting to the public. It shall give me a better sense of understanding the role that I am taking as an influential presenter to the society of particular stories that might shape the human culture and characteristics.
As said earlier, I do believe that there is more to screenwriting than just writing as it is. The creative work put forth by every screenwriter into his work is something that is remarkable. Having sleepless nights and just letting the ideas flow freely in one’s mind may not be as easy as it may sound. In fact, there are instances when such procedures become specifically pressuring. Of course, for one to be fully inspired, he has to know how to be open to new experiences. I understand that at times, my secluded personality may have a negative effect on the manner by which I reach my dream of becoming a successful screenwriter. Being open to new experiences is another aspect of the profession that I have to train myself with. Not scared of being scorned with bad experiences should be my goal to make sure that I can make stories that have in depth meaning which the viewers would be able to relate to.
My behavior and my character as a person specifically fits the requirements of becoming a screenwriter. I do believe though that I still have so much to learn and so much to practice if I really want to be successful in the said field. I need to know the fact that in life there is a story worth writing about, and to be able to find the right story, I should be open to accepting life’s challenges fully as an individual and as a writer altogether. With the possibility of embracing such challenges towards improving myself, I see no reason for me not to be able to capture that dream of becoming a successful screenwriter.
