My Involvement, Admission Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 653

Essay

My involvement in extracurricular activities is a way to help those who need attention and warmth: children and senior citizens.  Having good grades and submitting assignments on time does not make you a good student.  My contributions may not be huge, but I have tried to give some of my time to those who are in need.  Throughout high school, I have been involved with several different activities.  First of all, being part of the Global Recycling Organization has helped me to meet new people, and most of all it helped me to learn not only the idea of giving to others, but also of deriving from them a sense of spirit; and in doing so, I gave the president of the club a sac full of clothes to donate to the needy people around the country.  In addition, club members gather after school to write on the walls to spread awareness about certain types of crises around the world.  For example, last year we wrote the statistical measurements of the African populace who have AIDS and HIV.  We have helped hundreds of people in our community become aware of the importance of these crises and offer a number of solutions that we can do here at home to help those people across the world.

My volunteer efforts with the elderly have been very effective as I have been spending time with them.  Many of the people I meet with are lonely and just need someone to talk to.  In order to help, I always bring my chess set and play a couple of games with them to help strike up a conversation and do my part to improve their day.  Not only I have made them happier, but I have given them the opportunity to speak with someone that is not a part of the hospital or nursing home and it provides them a very good outlet for stress and frustrations.  In addition to community involvements, I also helped my own community in a number of ways.  Since I am from Egypt, I did the best I could to make a difference across this unprivileged country.  Over the past two summers, I have noticed a growing problem in Egypt where many children feel as though they are alone and helpless.  I decided to act upon this, and while visiting my father in Egypt, I decided to spend my weekends at a local orphanage where I bonded with ten young boys between the ages of two and nine.  To break the ice, I came equipped with a bag full of Power Rangers and laser swords – things no young boy can resist.  After I returned to the States, I have made an effort to keep in touch, sending the children letters and letting them know that I am still thinking about them.  Next summer, I will be returning to the Dar-El-Atyam orphanage to see how my little boys are faring.

Finally, I am proud to say that I have also participated in sports and athletics in my local community and high school.  I am a player for the tennis team and I was also on the football team for one year.  Tennis is by far my favorite sport because it is a game that involves being physically-skilled, but you must also use mental strategies to win the sets and match.  Besides tennis, I have also been participating in weight lifting activities in my high school career.  This has become my favorite hobby because it physically helps me stay in shape.  I have developed a very strong bond with many of my classmates that share in these activities and it has really helped provide me an excellent opportunity to fit in.  In addition to these activities, I am also the vice president of the ping pong club that meets every Wednesday.  We attend many different events and competitions and have a lot of fun doing it.
