Recession | Depression |
In both, there was increased unemployment. By the end of the 2nd term of President Roosevelt, there was 21% unemployment and ended at 24.9%. | In 1930s lack of employment changed, however, there was no recovery. In the beginning of Obama’s first term, unemployment was 8% and increased to 10%, but later fall under the 10% mark. However, no significant recovery has taken place. |
On the other hand, in 2008 recession, GDP rose about one percent and prices rose nearly 4%. Therefore, the GDP in 2008 was on the rise as compared to that one of the Great Depression of the 1930s.
|
The GDP fell 9% in the initial year of the great depression as the prices of the commodities fell 2.5%. |
Between 2007 and 2009 recession, United State of America lost 57 banks that represented about 0.6% of the total banks in the U.S. | During the great depression between January 30, 1933 and March 1933, 9,096 bank closures. This represented 50% of U.S banks |
More money was channeled to the economy in 2008, which saw to the saving of the jobs that were there even though unemployment was not eradicated. | However, during the great depression, the Federal reserve did little in the supply of money because of the policy actions of backing money by precious metals; therefore, the economy was stricken to several years of deflation and slow growth. |
The stock market in the 2008 recession fell by 50% and hence wiped out assets worth trillions. | The US economy was slowing down and the stock market crashed. On the 23rd October 1929, the stock market lost 4 months of earlier gains. |
The federal reserve curbed inflation by ensuring that banks offered loans at low interests. Inflation rates were low. | Although there was inflation, the rate was low and the prices of goods and services remained constant. |
Businesses declined by the end of 2007 up to 2009. | Business downturns were experienced from 1929 to 1938. |
By increasing the supply of money, the United States of America government had to borrow money from the external sources and hence increased the national debt.
Increase in the national debt called for an increase in taxation, and hence affecting the economy it was trying to salvage from the recession.
Every dollar that the U.S government injected in to the economy was taxed. Therefore, the money that was availed to the people was less than 100% because of the tax and hence this could not automatically end recession at once.
Therefore, this supply could not improve the GDP of the American citizens, as no significant value that was added. Money was borrowed and injected into the enhance demand and production that did not succeed since the government debts to other countries and institution and taxation increased hence emptying the people’s pockets. The same money that was supplied to the economy was fast taken away.
The supply of external money in the economy leads to rise in the inflation rates, as there is more demand for commodities than the supply. People having money in their pockets tend to spend much and hence the prices of the commodities raise leading to inflation in the end.
