Negative Labels, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 295

Essay

While a negative label has not necessarily plagued me emotionally, I have had some experience with a negative label.  My friends are well aware of my tendency to surf the Internet quite a bit at times, so they may playfully call me a “geek.”  However, I have not had an experience where either a more serious negative label has been used, or any negative label in a more egregious manner.

The negative label has certainly not caused me emotional harm.  When my friends and I are joking around, it’s common to use a term in this realm to try and be funny – of course, I know they mean no harm.  It honestly has not gotten under my skin, so to speak, as I know something like that is not said in a mean manner or anything.

With the negative label, it has not really become an easily-identifiable label associated with me.  Thus, the question of it becoming a permanent marker in my life isn’t necessarily relevant.  My close friends my make a playful reference to it, but it isn’t something that most other people would be aware of or use in another situation.

Overall, the negative label mentioned has not made a substantial impact in my life, and certainly not in a negative manner – in my opinion.  However, I have seen the kinds of labels that can plague an individual, such as with references to weight or serious personal circumstances.  Luckily for my sake, that type of hurt and attachment has not been felt by me.  While these types of labels are unfortunate, there are plenty of cases where they can have long-lasting, deep emotional impact on a person.  In my personal experience, that is not the case, fortunately, though many others are not as lucky.
