Essay

How can an ability to negotiate effectively help you manage change in a project? Be specific about a scenario in which good negotiation skills would help you to control change.

When you make changes effectively you can bring your business to a new realm of envy and production. A person must be an avid decision maker and understand negotiating skills in order to be an effective leader to change a project for the better. Strategic leaders must keep goals in mind and know how to implement them into a project. Negotiation is the way two or more people reach an agreement all are happy with. Common beliefs, values and cultures help negotiators gain advantage in a changing project situation. Knowing how to proceed is very advantageous for a negotiator. He/She must plan every step along the way and facilitate it into action. He/She must be ready for negative reactions to overcome and make a “win/win” situation happen.

Good negotiation skills can help you to control change in a controlled environment. An example is at a laboratory setting. LEAN Shell team was attempting to implement a safer way of conducting business in the Houston, TX Research and Development laboratories. The leader of the group opened with the idea that the DCP lab needed to be totally revamped in order to make it in compliance with OSHA standards. Some management disagreed that this would take away time from production and generating lab results. Techs added in that they could do both, run the samples and partially revamp the lab as the sample load suppressed. Over a three month period LEAN accomplished its goal and so did the lab though negotiation and re-negotiation processes by keeping an open mind and able to hear and proceed against their intentions.
