It is inevitable that conflicts will occur during the lifetime period regardless of the efforts that one may put to prevent or avoid their occurrence. The question that we have a duty to pay attention to is not how to avoid them but rather how to respond to them when they occur. As a matter of fact, conflicts are manageable when the parties involved recognize it as problem that needs urgent attention and have taken concerted efforts towards arriving at a permanent solution.
Conflicts are caused by a number of incidences that range from disagreements, misunderstandings to revenge, war and civil uprisings. These may be both genuine and selfish or personal which validates whether the propagators have a just cause to react in a manner that draws the attention of the accused and to register their annoyance. The maturity of the offended comes into play in determining how far the conflict will go since the way he handles the whole scenario gives makes the conflict severe or mild (Wilmot & Hocker, 2007).
Conflict resolution procedures
These can be defined as the efforts that individuals put in place to manage the rise and spread of conflicts. The best ways to bring amicable solutions to conflicts require dealing with the causes and eliminating the sources of the same. In this case, the individuals involved should take an active role to ensure the success of conflict resolution. There are various ways in which conflicts are resolved which include negotiation, mediation and diplomacy. In this paper, particular interest is on the use of negotiation in resolution of conflicts. The use of negotiation has achieved credible successes in bringing together warring groups to peace and facilitating the administration of appropriate justice to the criminal cases Thompson (2001)
Negotiation implies to procedures that are appropriately applied to achieve conflict resolution amongst individuals or parties. The process also involves resolution of differences with the use of trade-offs that have been mutually accepted by the concerned parties. A situation of negotiation has inevitable when cheaper products are dumped by farmers of a specific country to the market of a neighboring country. The indigenous farmers of the country where the products have been dumped expect to undergo huge losses as a result of poor prices of their products and this is a situation in which negotiation is warranted (Thompson 2001).
The farmers in the two countries are entangled in struggles because the goals for each party are incompatible. The conflict arises as a result of one side interfering with the achievement of goals of the other side. In the process of negotiation in this case, good communication was the most applicable process to end the existing conflict. The plans for achieving their goals of both stakeholders were through the application of formal approval as well as ratification. (Thompson 2001)
The solution to dumping cheaper products is achievable when effective communication is in place with a clear focus on tolerance, understanding a positive channel of feedback. Greater achievements were arrived at after the consideration of turning the process of negotiation in to a discussion that was more interactive leading to a collaboration and consequently development of a business partnership of win-to-win.
The types of power involved during the process of negotiation included identification of common goals in addition to particular areas that required the application of collaboration. This was followed by building of a reasonable infrastructure that facilitated supporting of the goals after making clear the purpose. The differences between the two parties were then accentuated for the purpose of clarity of interests. A thorough understanding of arising differences between the stakeholders at conflict also played a pivotal role in the process of negotiation
