New England, Thesis Paper Example

The region of New England has produced a significant number of well-known writers over the course of U.S. history. Notable authors from the region include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau and many others. Among the most famous of the writers from New England is Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of the classic of America literature The Scarlet Letter. As is the case with much of his work, The Scarlet Letter contains themes about the puritanical sensibilities of Hawthorne’s era, and offers readers a compelling psychological study of the story’s characters. Hawthorn’s writing was strongly influenced by his upbringing and by the social and political climate of his day. This paper will examine the ways that Hawthorne’s writing reflected the unique characteristics of New England in the 19^th century, and will explore some of the themes that Hawthorne’s writing shares with other notable authors from the region.
