Newton’s Physics and the Conceptual Structure, Research Paper Example

Newton’s first, second, and third laws relate to exercise because these laws define the physics of movement. Newton’s first law states that objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless external forces are applied. Therefore, the body is likely to move until friction exerts its force against it, causing it to stop. To move, one must move their muscles in a manner that overpowers the natural resistance of friction. Newton’s second law states that the relationship between an object’s mass and its acceleration is the applied force. This is related to exercise because greater masses, such as heavier weights, require a greater force to lift and it becomes easier to lift this weight if it is done quickly. Newton’s third law explains that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is evident when someone pushes weight upwards, they must act against the force of the weight which is pushing downwards.

An example of Newton’s first law is when an individual runs and eventually must stop because they become tired. At first, they are able to fight against friction, but over time, the ability of their muscles to overcome this natural tendency is overpowered. Newton’s second law is exemplified by slamming battle ropes against the floor. Heavier ropes slammed at a greater speed create a greater force. Last, Newton’s third law is exemplified by deadlifting; the weight is pushing downwards, and the person must resist it by pushing upwards. Even if the weight is not pushed upwards, it is easy to feel the force of gravity combined with the weight pushing down onto the body. If a person cannot handle this resistance, it will naturally trend downwards and an injury can result.
