1.D1. No. Male and female managers do have significantly different skill profiles, just like managers of different age-groups have different skill profiles.  For example, managers and employees of the same sex and age group in general understand each other better.

2.D2. People respond to their present and expected environments. Those two variables largely if not absolutely determine whether Theory X or Theory Y will be applicable.

3.D2. Travel offers social opportunities for establishing first-time personal and professional connections. Later, teleconferencing can be used effectively (Hester, 2011).

4.D1. Yes. The cultivation of emotion is essential in motivating employees. It is essential in leading them. Emotion is essential in instilling in a team a competitive urge to win.

4.D2. That one factor will depend on the workplace. This is where Theory X and Y come into play. Is it X or Y? Work is not play in a coercive workplace. Work is just work.

5.D2. Expectancy theory is all about a personal opportunity to excel by working harder. It makes little difference whether the organization is large or small. Personal autonomy is key.

7.D1. Cooperation and competition are two sides of the same coin, and both require honesty, transparency, a common goal, and a shared culture (Tauer, 2009).

8.D2. Communication Distortion (CD) is what happens when either messages are not or seem not clearly understood in superior-subordinate communications. Example: you send a message to your manager detailing three important matters. In reply only the third point is addressed. You must now consider what the omission means, if anything. I have never knowingly practiced CD professionally, but have personally. Email is uniquely suited to it.

9.D2  Pro: there are strategic rules of leadership that apply across the board. Con: the tactics of implementing them will require very different things from different kinds of leaders.
