Notre Dame de Paris Conflict Analysis, Essay Example

Just to give a glimpse of the disdain of the crown during this period I will quote this line, “While they waited the crowd of poor townspeople stood and watched rowdy and ragged beggars and they broke windows and shouted to the actors and Pierre Gringoire.”) (Hugo, 2006). Pierre Gringoire neither had fear nor disdain for the monsieur cardinal. There was no spot of weakness nor was there any strength behind his personality and charms. He had a calming which made the monsieur full of jealousy and sometimes rage. Aridne on the other hand had a special unwinding with him from the commencement of the world that made him the envy of others. This was subdued through a labyrinth of human affairs. Pierre Gringoire was a man full of distinction of which he was admired as an older and wiser man. “Father du Breul wrote about the freeness of liberty and speech of which he made use of through speeches to the messeigneurs the cardinals, uncle and Brother to Monsieur the Prince de Conty and with respect always to his greatness without offending anyone much at all.” (“Victor Hugo: Notre Dame de Paris”). He was gloried to call himself a Parisian by name, nation and by language. This caused great animosity within the congregation at times between the young and the old for they did not see the world the same as Father du Breul did but he was still respected for his thoughts. Keep in mind there was neither hatred nor disdain for the presence of the cardinal though he was an older man. He was highly respected.

Gringoire enjoyed speaking in front of a crowd. He was swollen at the breath of popular admiration which made him pompous. He represented a ballet of reality and humanity which some feared and were distraught by his self-esteem. He would gladly speak to his neighbor and inquire as to whose masterpiece was this. Though the arrival of the cardinal was considered unruly and abrupt many took it with grandeur and proudest yearning to learn more from the mighty man. It was quite eminent the audience was upset by his prominence as their heads turned towards the gallery. Every person though wanted to get a better view of him. Each and every man viewed him whilst attempting to thrust their head over their neighbor’s shoulder. He was a devout and powerful man of which some feared and of which some envied. In fact he was a Royal man of good nature who had lost his mother. He deserved some empathy and respect.

Many were agreeable to the Richard la Garmoise and Thomasse la Saillarde who “bestowed alms on pretty girls rather than old women.” (“Victor Hugo: Notre Dame de Paris”). He was always surrounded by a small group of bishops and abbes of high lineage and gallant. There were scandalous women who would pass and whisper during the days and nights corralling to the clinking of glasses whilst hearing the proverbs of Benedict XII “who was a Pope that added a third crown to the Tiara-Bibamus papaliter.” (“Victor Hugo: Notre Dame de Paris”). He was not disposed to respect the entrance of a cardinal hence this brought some disdain to the situation. He wore his scarlet robe well, though.

When the Cardinal de Bourbon entered the room all bowed to him for he was a handsome man. Each man pointed out someone they should recognize in the crowd. The scholars swore at his entrance. There were gay gossips in the crowd that stood before him. There were loose women all over with belligerent attitudes. They did not abstain for they were frightful with blasphemies and enormities by the presence of St. Louis. A deep silence settled over the assembly which was accompanied by laughter and preposterous names. At this point the cardinal made three steps and a bow. He then introduced Guilliaume Ryme of which no one knew who he was. He was appreciated to be a miner of Europe and one who had familiarity with Louis XI. Everyone was amazed at the cardinal’s politeness to the man and the entire crowd.  He was considered a Flemish bailiff.

There is a great deal of hanging and villainy in this book which the crowd finds acceptable as a means of punishment during those times. Claude Frollo perhaps deserves the hanging which he experiences from the tower of Notre Dame which brings him to his imminent death. There is constant conflict between the leaders and the followers. There is little to no sympathy for Quasimodo despite his despairing disability. Esmeralda is the only one who seems to keep her heart pure and “full of pity for all suffering who possesses a heart that beats with such a true woman’s love.” (“Notre Dame de Paris”). Quentin goes on to prove pure sagacity as he saves the woman he loves. There is pure drama and disdain throughout the book with some people showing pure hate and some showing love and admiration. “Gloom, horror, darkness, evil deeds, human ineptitude and moral wrongs is the background of Notre Dame.” (“Notre Dame de Paris”). The townspeople start rumors as Esmeralda brings her goat to the town. They begin to say she is involved in witchcraft as the goat plays pretty tricks. Whispers start to flaunt across the circle of town. The book does not live with a normal day of life rather live with one full of avid imagination. The author compels the acceptance of the world in which he has created. He depicts a magnificent writing force of language and power as if he “were concentrating on a force of light beyond promise.” (“Notre Dame de Paris”).
