I was working at a hospital and learnt that some of the incoming interns had no surgical skills because curriculum at some colleges doesn’t cover surgical experiments at all or only later in the program. I realized that lack of surgical skills will prevent some of the interns from fully realizing the benefits of the internship. Hospitals provide internships to maximize student learning but they cannot achieve their objective unless the student has a solid foundation.

Realizing the severity of the issue, I consulted with other doctors at the hospital and our discussions led to the formation of a five-member team consisting of the doctors that would offer a special course to the targeted students over the weekend. The doctors soon found that the students who took the course started performing better on the average than those who didn’t because the quality of curriculum at different colleges varies. The realization convinced the hospital to make the course mandatory for all the future interns even if some may already have experience with surgical experiments. The hospital has also initiated dialogue with different colleges to help them improve the curriculum and enhance the marketability of their graduates.

This example demonstrates my ability to carefully analyze the problem at hand and come up with innovative solution even if the solution may not be common. I understood that even though the hospital had no control over the curriculum at colleges, it had to do something in order to maximize the learning experience of the interns otherwise it would just be a waste of the hospital’s resources. I identified stakeholders who had the authority and convinced them that the issue was worth tackling.
