Null Hypothesis to the Impact Income, Education, and Race Have on the Viability of Candidates Who Run for Re-election to Tennessee School Boards

Members of the Tennessee School Board who make at least $20,000 are re-elected more frequently than those who do not make at least $20,000.

Members of the Tennessee School Board who have some form of education – high school to Masters level – are re-elected more frequently than those who have doctorate or terminal degrees.

Members of the Tennessee School Board who were identified as being part of a minority group (as concerns race) are re-elected far less frequently than those who are identified as not being a part of a minority group.

The valid number of cases in the study is 307.

There are probably 117 school board members running for re-election who make between $50,000 and $60,000 a year.

There are probably 21 African American school board members running for re-election.

Ordinal by Kendall’s tauc-c is the test of association that is most appropriate to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis in this study.

There is no relationship between re-election and Education.  The statistics tell us that people with some form of education (from high school to Masters level) get re-elected about the same rate as people without education.  However, people who have terminal or doctorate level degrees do not get re-elected at the same rate as people with lesser forms of education.

There is a relationship between re-election and Income.  The statistics tell us that the more candidates make, the better the candidate’s chances of re-election.   However, as candidate’s run for multiple terms, income is not a determinative factor in the candidate’s success or failure re-election rate.

There is a relationship between re-election and Race.  The statistics tell us that candidates who are identified as being part of a minority group are elected less frequently than candidates who are not associated with minority groups.  However, minority candidates are re-elected about the same rate after they complete their first term.
