Nurse Friendly Work Setting, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 344

Essay

Nurse executives carry on in the search of ways to support staff nurses by enhancing the working environment in promotion of professional practice environments. This is through finding all means to create a healthy culture and develop routine and effective practice in nursing (Bass, 1994). It is true that not all hospitals hold intensive resources required in pursuing a Nurse-Friendly Hospital program (Boswell, 2004). This should not be a hindrance to the hospitals for pursuing the important components necessary for the promotion of a nurse friendly work setting. In looking at these components, organizational culture is very significant. It includes the values, norms and rituals characterizing an organization and it is the social control mechanism relevant in setting expectations about suitable attitudes and behaviors in the working environment (Angelina, 1995). In this case, these values should be of relevance in any operational hospital in creating a healthy culture in nursing.

Influential factors to a healthy culture in nursing include provision of opportunities for independent clinical practice as well as participative decision-making, valuing nurses as practicing professional, providing a fit environment for continued learning and creating a room for supportive relationships between nurses, physicians, and the overall management (Angelina, 1995). Healthy culture in nursing is all about job satisfaction of the nurses in their field. That is why these supportive approaches should be availed in any organization. To enhance the healthy culture and keep it rolling in the organization mentorship is necessary (Bass, 1994). Mentorship creates best opportunities for growth in the organization and gives the nurses a perfect environment assured of improving their profession in the nursing career (Bass, 1994). Elements including expectations, recognition opportunities, rewards, value conflicts and support within the hospital setting are valuable in creating a mentoring interaction (Boswell, 2004).
