Nurse Practitioner, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 344

Essay

As a nurse practitioner, the ability to have greater oversight regarding the care and treatment of my patients is of critical importance in shaping expanded comprehensive quality of care on a consistent basis. Through the modification of laws to increase responsibility for nurse practitioners and to allow for easier payment of these services, there is likely to be a higher level of engagement within the profession and throughout the healthcare system (Yee, Boukus, Cross, & Samuel, 2013). However, the role of nurse practitioner must be clearly identified and provide a basis for examining the inherent needs of healthcare practice and the patients who are served in this capacity (Joel, 2013).

When nurses are absent on a health care provider panel, it may be difficult to recognize the significant impact of this profession on healthcare practice; however, recognizing the talents and potential of this group may go a long way in supporting their needs on a continuous basis and in recognizing the value of increasing their level of responsibility to achieve greater balance in treating a larger number of patients. APNs must be recognized for their value to the system and their importance to patients in providing expert care, treatment, knowledge, and compassion for their needs. If these concepts are understood, advocating for expanded responsibilities for APNs may become less difficult to achieve.

APN must demonstrate fiscal accountability in their understanding of the costs associated with healthcare practice across many areas. They must be budget conscious and recognize that resources are limited in many areas, which places further stress on patients when access to care is limited and on the work that an organization is able to perform. Therefore, APNs must be knowledgeable regarding fiscal matters because their roles involve the allocation of resources to address specific needs that have a direct impact on patients throughout the healthcare system.
