Pages: 1

Words: 269

Essay

The Issue

It is the collective policy of nurse practitioners in this community in conjunction with the Nurse Practitioner Association (NPA) to support (A.5308/S.3289) Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act. This release is intended to educate the public about how they should support (A.5308/S.3289) Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act and why. A.5308 (Gottfried)/S.3289 (Young) – NP Modernization Act

Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried, Chair of the Assembly Health Committee and Senator Catharine M. Young has sponsored this legislation. It means to permit certified nurse practitioners to diagnose certain ailments and follow through with certain treatments before consulting a physician or surgeon. In the event of more serious injuries and diseases, practitioners would readily defer to the expertise of medical doctors.

Background

The division of labor between nursing and medicine has traditionally been drawn a level of diagnosis and treatment. Realistically, however, much of the application of prescriptions is exacted by nurses. An appropriately trained practitioner nursing professional is experienced enough to perform some of these duties without direct supervision from a physician. The ability to apply these skills would relieve more patients more quickly, save hospitals and taxpayers money, and lighten some of the workload on medical doctors.

Take Action

Your nurse practitioners ask that your support this bill in order optimize healthcare toward its universal aims. In order to bring quality healthcare to more people more efficiently, the NPA asks that your support (A.5308/S.3289) Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act in our next referendum.
