Nurses Scope of Practice, Essay Example

Across the healthcare spectrum, the use of standard terminology is a critical component in the continued growth and expansion of a given strategy to meet the needs the patients. For advanced practice nurses, it is their responsibility to acquire knowledge and terminology that will enable them to perform their roles effectively and consistently across different environments. Standardized terminology and nomenclature are desirable because they provide additional support and guidance for patients as advanced practice nurses work collaboratively to meet these needs. It is important for nurses to be proactive in their efforts to utilize terminology as a form of communication with other colleagues and to recognize the value of developing a framework for success that will have positive and lasting benefits for users. It is important for nurses to be cognizant of their options in expanding the options that are available to them and to improve the practice environment and its scope through consistency in knowledge and terminology (Fairman, Rowe, Hassmiller, & Shalala, 2011). This process is essential for the growth of advanced practice nursing and in meeting patient care needs and expectations.

Nurses must also be able to meet expectations and provide an environment in which there are significant opportunities to improve the practice setting through their actions. Their use of fundamental terminology and other resources will go a long way in this process and support an environment of growth and consistency in the treatment of patients (Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall, 2013). These factors will support a long-term strategy to improve outcomes for advanced practice nurses and facilitate a successful dialogue among colleagues in order to be successful in treating patients effectively and on a continuous basis. Nurses must also be able to translate their experience into practical solutions, using terminology as a driving force in this process so that patient care outcomes are successful and appropriate for improving the quality of care that is received.
