The 6 areas that the professional nurse should consider when making delegation decisions.

Six areas which a professional nurse should consider while executing delegation include pateints needs ( Assessment); organization’s policies ( planning protocol); staffing composition ( staff workload); resources in the clinical setting ( supervision needed); clinical situation in relation to expertise required to function effectively  (complexity) and the professional competence of the person delegated( capabilities) (Cherry & Jacob, 2014).

The 9 essential requirements for safe and Effective Delegation.

Effective delegation encompasses allocating the right nurse, to the right patient at right time. As such, the nine essential requirements encompass nine areas of knowing. They include knowing the patient and the specific care needs; knowing the standards of nursing practice pertaining to the particular condition; knowing the organizational policies and procedures; knowing the clinical situation; knowing staff competence; know the right nurse for each procedure; knowing the right time to allocate tasks; knowing the tasks to be allocated and knowing when to adjust delegation (Cherry & Jacob, 2014).

Which of the tasks must the RN perform as required by the CA Nurse Practice Act and which can be delegated to other available team members?

The registered nurse is responsible for delegation of duties; monitoring subordinate staff function when duties are allocated; medication administration and all complex nursing procedures such as catherization and venipuncture interventions. He/she is also responsible for supervision of the clinical setting in which he/she functions. Nursing duties which can be allocated to a Certified Nursing Assistant include bed bath, monitoring a pateints blood pressure during a crisis. The Licensed Practical Nurse can be delegated some medication administration under supervision, but none requiring venipuncture. He /she is also responsible for developing and recoding a patient’s history (California Board of Nursing, 2014).

These duties are within the training protocol of these two categories of nursing staff and they can be performed under supervision of a professional nurse (California Board of Nursing, 2014).
