Nursing Information System, Essay Example

Nursing Informatics is a combination of computer science, information science, and nursing science (Kwantlen).The abilities described by The Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice (ANA, 2007) will help me not only improve my performance quality but also efficiency. I will be able to process patient’s data faster and reduce errors that often result from manually processing patient’s information. In addition, I will also improve my analysis of patient’s records because software programs will provide customized responses to my queries, a process that would have been quite time-consuming otherwise.

I believe that the ability to use computerized patient records and the ability to support patient safety through information technology are quite important because not only they will make it possible to properly analyze all of the patients’ data in a short time but they will also reduce human-errors and improve the quality of patient diagnosis.

My definition of nursing informatics is now quite similar Rognehaugh who defined nursing informatics as the use of computer and information technologies that support any nursing function carried out by nurses in the performance of their duties (Mapping the literature of nursing informatics). The computers have proven themselves to be better at storing and processing information than us. Nursing information involves tremendous amount of information storage and processing and thus, Nursing Informatics was born out of realization that computers could help transform the field of nursing science.
