Nursing: Library Search, Essay Example

Essay

Path taken to locate article: steps to enter library, access CINAHL through Chamberlain Online Library

I began my search on the Library website at http://library.chamberlain.edu/. To access books, journals and any reference resources the database button was clicked. The next step entailed using the health science link to access databases, which index Nursing/Allied

Health/Medical information. In this stage the CINAHL emerged. This site utilizes the EBSCOhost search interface. I then used the go to source search feature and looked for scholarly peer-reviewed articles.

The name of the database directs users to a link to the resource, through a log in screen, which instructs viewers to fill in the required information. This includes inserting my DSI#. After logging in the landing page for EBSCOhost database appeared on the screen. I then clicked on the Medline & CINAHL link which directed me a search option where the words nursing theory was inserted. A series of articles emerged and I refined my search to include full text research article. One article was selected.

Quotation with Citation

‘Research on African American motherhood has primarily focused on poor birth outcomes’  (Fouquier, 2013, p. 203).

Summary of article

The purpose of this research was to evaluate current knowledge pertaining to the theory of maternal role attainment (MRA) focusing on its relevance towards interpreting African American motherhood.  Nine (9) articles distinctly described the maternal role attainment (MRA) theory.  The results revealed that a great limitation existed when these articles did not provide sufficient homogenous samples related to two major groups. They are classified as low –income single African American adolescents and upper-middle-class white women. Ultimately, generalization inconsistencies developed and the results could not have been generalized to African American women exclusively.  Further research in maternal role attainment is needed.

Use in Future Practice

This research article highlights a situation occurring within my practice regarding insufficient evidence –based research for certain conditions affecting minority groups in the society. I believe that lack of research to establish profound evidence could greatly affect my delivery of care as a registered nurse. I must function from the level of evidence-based practice. This develops through research. For example, no cures can be found for diseases and conditions old diseases such as sickle cell. My practice as a registered nurse could greatly benefit from more research in this condition because many African Americans are affected by the condition.
