Nursing Philosophy Statement, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 617

Essay

I have always enjoyed meeting people. Social interaction has not only helped me broaden my thinking perspectives but has also taught me valuable people skills. I am proud to come from a family that believes in service to the community. My parents would often tell me that life is not only about pursuing personal dreams and goals but is also about being a source of comfort to others. Thus, it is no surprise that I have always been active in community programs and volunteer events. At the same time, I also enjoyed science courses in high school because I am inquisitive.

Probably the single greatest influence on my decision to pursue a nursing career path is a nursing practitioner I met while working as a laser technician. I had met many working professionals but I found no one to be as happy at their job as this particular nursing practitioner was. As I thought about a potential career choice, nursing seemed to be the best choice. I concluded that not only nursing will be a great fit to my strengths and skills but this career path will also allow me to make a difference in others’ lives. The fact that I have developed great people skills through interaction with people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds will also give me a competitive advantage in the nursing profession. I am often told that I am a great communicator and listener because I do not judge people and am able to put myself in others’ shoes.

I will be different from other nurses because I have a huge faith in the power of preventive medicine and healthcare services. Nurses should not only help patients but also encourage people to take better care of themselves so as to avoid the need of medical care in the first place. In addition, the changing population demographics mean nurses with cross-cultural knowledge will be at a competitive advantage because they could cater to patients from different ethnic and cultural background. Different cultures often have different values and even communication styles and the ability to understand a patient not only improves the quality of service but also ensures a greater level of cooperation from the patient.

I see myself as a registered nurse in five years but I will also demonstrate leadership skills. I read nursing magazines such as Scrubs and also keep myself up-to-date on the emerging trends and issues in the healthcare sector and population demographics. I also believe that the role of technology will continue to increase in every profession including nursing which is why I continue to upgrade my computing and technology skills. The world has been changing at such a rapid pace due to technological advancements that it is not possible to become a good nurse unless one engages in substantial amount of learning outside the class also. I also read about latest nursing trends in other parts of the world because due to globalization, national boundaries are disappearing and it is possible that many nursing professionals may also work in other countries. Unlike the U.S., many developed countries, particularly, those in Europe are facing aging population and declining birth rate at the same time which means there will be more professional opportunities for nursing professionals on a global scale.

One of my major contributions to the nursing profession will be the idea that nursing as a profession is being impacted by external factors to a greater extent than has ever happened before in the history. I will also emphasize the fact that nursing profession needs more leaders and nursing professionals should participate more in the decision-making processes at healthcare institutions because they interact with and understand patients better than anyone else.
