Nursing Profession Faces Serious Challenges, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 312

Essay

The nursing profession is distinctive and offers the individual suited for the job the opportunity to help others during a vulnerable time during their circumstances. Supply and demand over the next 10 years is going to be a key challenge for the nursing profession. Vera Dordick (2002) reports the supply has decreased as there is a reduction in the number of individuals choosing nursing as a career.  As the current nursing supply begins to age and move towards retirement, younger individuals are needed to complete nursing school and learn from the existing group. Nursing is a physically and emotionally challenging career and the long hours and often low pay is a deterrent for graduating high school seniors. Principal Nursing Officer Mrs. Henrietta Douglas-Christmas stressed in a conference that “the nursing profession faces unprecedented change, driven by globalization, migration and aging population, the HIV/AIDS pandemic and changes in nursing education and practice” (Addresses, 2010, para. 2). These challenges can be dealt with by proactively monitoring nurse registration, nursing school accreditation and developing regional framework guidelines to address the issues.

An obstacle which I recognize involves technology.  Tim Porter-O’Grady (2003) states’ nursing is at a crossroads due to interventions being altered by technological, cultural, political and social realities. These elements will change the way health care is delivered and how nursing is taught and distributes. Moving forward to take advantage requires education to individuals entering nursing schools for new procedures and the ever changing technology available. Nursing education to teach new models is vital to taking advantage of opportunities for nursing practices.
