Nutrition for the Older Adult, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 440

Essay

Older adults face a litany of health issues due to illnesses and conditions directly associated with an aging population. One out of every three members of the older adult population is economically vulnerable because they suffer from chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Moreover, the recent economic recessions and problems have spawned more obstacles for senior citizens that result in quotidian struggles with regards to medical and other daily expenses.

The two most important points I learned from this movie were that seniors need to make trips to grocery store very organized and effective according to health principles by making a list of groceries of what seniors want to and need to eat for the week. The grocery list needs to contain the primary staples that contain the necessary nutritional contents for seniors such as oatmeal, which contains ample fiber. Preparation of a grocery list, and the purchasing of necessary staples are critical for enhancing the health of aging Americans.

My grandmother is one important senior in my life who has had a profound influence in my development as a young adult. She is 81 years old and still has an active and healthy diet. She is able to walk on the treadmill and eat 4 meals a day. However, her diet is low on fiber. I would suggest that, in addition to eggs in the morning for breakfast, she also consume more oatmeal. She should also add a nutritional vegetable portion to her dinner such as spinach in order to increase her fiber intake.

On January 30, 2012 there was a post about the nutritional comparison of wine versus beer. The title of the post is “Beer Lovers, No Need to Wine: A Nutritional Comparison of Beer Versus Wine”

Alcohol is a social component of life in America today. However, its nutritional benefits and detriments are rarely considered in their consumption on a quotidian basis. This article was posted around the time when the Super Bowl was being played. Alcohol and major sporting events are often related. The author argues that beer is more beneficial in terms of health than wine is contrary to popular.

Older adults should remain cognizant of the types of calories they consume on a quotidian basis. Alcohol is full of empty calories and contributes to rates of osteoperosis, which is a debilitating condition that the elderly often confront. This reality should convince senior citizens to restrict their alcohol consumption.

I think a good follow up post would emphasize the adverse ramifications associated with alcohol consumption and bone health.

Food insecurity amplifies persistent medical conditions such as diabetes and others. Nutritional deficiencies are also often spawned by food insecurity.
