While adaptive maintenance is initiated in response to improvement requests by users within the organization, perfective maintenance is aimed at improving maintainability and performance, through reengineering and program restructuring. Hence preventive maintenance by the IT staff ensures that areas that are prone to problems are adequately analyzed.

Therefore, in order for the IT staff to shield the organizations against future changes and enhancements, maintenance requests should be captured through configuration management. Apart from responding to user requests the system should handle different versions of the information system and evenly distribute documentation changes. Once the maintenance changes are completed, the implementation process can begin immediately or collection and implementation can occur simultaneously through a release statement; is considered advantageous and cost-effective by consolidating all noncritical maintenance changes.

  • Despite the implementation of new systems and maintenance procedures, obsolescence finally catches up with information systems. In order for Oceanside to detect possible obsolescence in the organization’s system, they should watch for rapidly increasing operating or maintenance costs, new requirements that the current system cannot casually achieve, or availability of new hardware or software. At such a point when the system can no longer perform to the expected level, the organization will be forced to replace the system. The replacement of the system will imply that the whole process of system development life cycle restarts.
