One More Reason to Get a Good Night’s Sleep, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 281

Essay

According to the Purdue University online writing lab, logos refers to logic and the content of the text of material; ethos refers to an author’s (or speaker’s) perspectiveand how the text is portrayed; and pathos refers to emotion and the audience’s perspective(OWL).

The TED talks video reviewed is titled, “One more reason to get a good night’s sleep,” and it falls into the logos category because the speaker uses a great deal of fact, scientific evidence, and visual examples to get his point across to the audience. The speaker is also very informative about the details of new research that suggests his message is to be taken seriously, and he organizes his text in a way that sets up his points so that the audience easily understands him. Additionally, the speaker gives the audience different scenarios to ponder that also appear to prove his points. Furthermore, the speaker appeals to the audience members’ logic and sense of reasoning to get them to understand exactly what he is trying to convey to them, which is characteristic of the logos communication strategy. The speaker’s approach in the video is actually on the level of teaching and is effective in breaking down various aspects of the information at hand to prove his point and to get the audience to agree with what he is saying. This approach shows that the speaker is highly effective in getting his message across to the audience in such a way that he is believable, by using the logos method of communication strategy.
