Essay

Only Daughteris an article written by Sandra Cisneros in 1995. In it, Cisneros explains what life was like for her as she was growing up being the only daughter in the midst of six sons. Because of the fact that she was the only girl, her brothers did not like to be seen playing with her. This isolation gave Cisneros the opportunity to develop a passion for writing, being given the avenue to think. Throughout the course of her life, Cisneros had always wanted to be acknowledged by her father so she went to college in order to expand her studies and career. After a while, she became content because her father did not mind that she was going to study something as silly as English. At the same time, she wanted to prove to his father that she had a passion for writing, even if the only reason she wrote was to impress him. Her father, on the other hand, only wanted Cisneros to get married. When she was getting older and did not get married, her father repeatedly told her that she wasted her college education.

Cisneros started to make substantial financial gains after she acquired ten years of experience. He most famous book was recognized and awarded at her fellowship. However, her father still did not accept of Cisneros the way she wanted him to. One Christmas, Cisneros went home to show her father the story that she had just translated into Spanish. She found her father in his room about to play his favorite music. Cisneros then recalled the manner in which her father pressed the mute button just to hear her read the story. After finishing the reading of her story, her father, intrigued, asked, Where can we get more copies of this for our relatives?Cisneros explains how that was the most wonderful thing that happened to her that year.

The article as a whole is amazing one that tells the tale of a writing and how became infatuated with writing. It also explains why Cisneros did what she did and how she got started. I would recommend this article to anyone who has lost connection from his or her father as well as to females living in countries where women are not appreciated as much as they should be.
