Google Inc is among the most interesting companies to work for, due to its interesting organizational structure and culture. The company has several observable artifacts and espoused values that represent its culture.
Part 1
The core design team consisting of 16 members has a stand-up meeting each day, where each designer working on a project assembles for rapid-fire updates. The meeting represents the company’s intolerance of time wastage (Anon 33). The company’s unofficial corporate slogan is “Don’t be evil.” This represents the company’s desire to conduct its businesses ethically and morally. Next, the name of the company “Google” is a corrupted version of “Googol”, a mathematical term denoting 10 raised to the power of 100. The slogan represents the company mission of multiplying information, money and investors. The company’s employees use the 70/20/10 Rule, where they commit 70 percent of efforts each day attending to assigned projects, 20 percent on projects linked to core projects and 10 percent on new concepts. The rule represents the company’s mission to be committed to effectiveness, creativity and innovativeness (Thompson).
On the other end, espoused values are the clearly stated values and norms an organization prefers. Google’s corporate culture is based on the founder’s philosophy called the Famous Ten Tenet, where the culture is controlled directly with legacy culture set by the founders. Each employee is required to “focus on users, do something well, conduct something fast, make money ethically, achieve higher and believe that the need for information transcends all borders.” Overall, they are implicitly stated by the organization to enable employees know what the company considers as important (Towers 17-30).
Part 2
Person-organization fit is used by the company in recruiting individuals with norms and values that match those of the company. Google also hires individuals who are innovative, problem-solvers, organized and who have unquenchable desire for unlimited amounts of information (Hernandez). Based on the integrative model of OB, my cognitive abilities relates to job performance at Google. I would be fit for a position at Google as I’m highly innovative, time conscious, creative, problem-solver and has a knack for information search.
Conclusion
Overall, Google has an integrated culture consisting of four components, namely innovation, mission, reward and fun. The culture fits the needs of the organisation and marketplace.
