Original Comic Piece, Essay Example

Essay

Lindsey Smith, 33, a good mother, wife and housemaker, was enjoying her evening shower, when her two-year old son burst into the bathroom. She didn’t mind his company, and so he employed himself into making something only he knew what out of a roll of toilet paper.  Lindsey was taking pleasure in watching his fooling around. He made a great mess, yet looked so lovely when wrapping himself into toilet paper that touched mummy decided to take a picture of funny attire he had constructed for himself. And so she ran for her camera and took a few shots.

The pictures came out amazingly cute.  The kid looked so nicely, that Lindsey decided to make copies. Moreover, she decided to include one of those with each of their Christmas card being sent. A couple of days later, a relative of hers called Lindsey. She was laughing hysterically and could hardly utter a word. She was trying to say something about the photo. Finely, when she managed to control herself, she said: “Lindsey, darling, did you examine the picture you sent us attentively enough? I suggest you to take a closer look right now.”

The woman, a little bit confused, grabbed a photo and looked at it with concern. After a few moments of close observation, she was shocked to notice another figure being present on the picture but her little son. On the background there was a reflection in the mirror of a woman who wore nothing but a camera! Evidently, the naked woman was Lindsey herself, who hadn’t cared to put on something when hurrying to capture her son until he spoiled the view.

To say she was shocked is to say nothing. She kept silence for a rather long moment, and then said: “Well, at least I don’t look too bad with that damned camera being my only clothing.”

This story is a sort of anecdote. The reason I’ve chosen this particular plot is that I had once heard of it as of a true story and it made me laugh heartily. I also believe this comic essay to be an example of incongruity theory, which, as I mentioned in my previous paper, “sees humour as a response to an incongruity, a term broadly used to include ambiguity, logical impossibility, irrelevance, and inappropriateness.” I preferred to simply tell it as a funny story, since I believe this way of telling a joke is the most effective one. You never know how it ends, and the calm measured tempo of narrating a kind of absorbs and excites the reader. At least that is how I feel when reading this kind of jokes. I also like when the author telling the story seems to remain completely serious even when reaching the culmination of a joke. It endows the joke with some subtle ironic tone.
