OSHA and Whistleblower Law, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 280

Essay

A safe place of work determines the ability of an individual to enjoy health and opportunity to achieve the set goals in life. OSHA was established in 1970, with the solo purpose of assuring men and women in America, a healthy and safe place of work. Today, the mission of OSHA is still in place, saving lives, and preventing illnesses and injuries at work. Although there is no person known to me who has suffered because of poor services being offered by OSHA, its ineffectiveness is clear. According to statistics, the efforts of OSHA are going to the drain because thousands of people loose lives coming from accidents and injuries at their places of work. Additionally, instead on focusing on delivery of services to the people, OSHA focuses on rules, which are rarely enforced. OSHA has been at the centre of political debate and this may be the cause of poor services, but still, it is known for operating at a very meager budget, at the expense of its legislative role.

Even with the creation of whistleblower law, some employees are still apprehensive about coming forward with complaints. In most cases, revealing some undesirable information of a company can lead to a loss of employment. Employees are also in fear because they may be risking their lives by exposing some mismanagement of funds in a firm or in a government institution. The law requires that workers should ensure that they report any wrong thing to the supervisor prior to making a decision to go public. However, the problem is that, in the event the reported incidence is false, the worker may end up being sacked. These reasons make workers remain quiet.
