OSHA Standards and Compliance, Research Paper Example

Pages: 1

Words: 371

Research Paper

OSHA Standard Number 1910.95 covers issues related to occupational noise exposure. It has several subparts that further dictate the responsibilities employers have to ensure that workers are adequately protected against hearing damage. Among the responsibilities of employers are to provide PPE for hearing protection that is appropriate for various sound levels and work conditions. It may also be necessary for employers to utilize “feasible administrative or engineering controls” to minimize exposure to potentially-harmful sound levels. Employers must also establish a hearing conservation program for workers whose exposure to noise regularly exceeds 85db in an 8-hour period; such a program includes monitoring of sound levels in appropriate areas and the utilization of hearing testing as needed or appropriate.

The OSHA Standard for Powered Industrial Trucks, number 1910.178, covers a range of issues, from the safe operation of industrial trucks to concerns about fire safety, maintenance, and storage issues. Among the specific mandates for employers related to industrial tucks is that workers receive appropriate training and certification before they begin using forklifts and other such equipment, and that updated training and certification is also provided on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with all safety standards.

OSHA Standard Number 1910.132  applies to issues related to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This is a very broad area, as it relates to a variety of PPE, such as ear plugs, steel-toe shoes, hard hats, breathing equipment, and a wide range of other types of equipment. All of these standards are applicable to work in the Coca Cola bottling facility, though it is the one related to PPE which really emphasizes the significance of the responsibilities that employers face where safety regulations are concerned. Employers must consider every possible circumstance when assessing the safety of their facilities, and provide appropriate protection, training, and safe work environments for all workers. When considering the responsibilities facing employers, it becomes clear that workers must also take responsibility for doing their share by complying with all rules and regulations, using PPE properly, and otherwise doing their part where safety is concerned.
