OSI Stands for Open Systems Interconnection, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 299

Essay

Open Systems Interconnection is a model that allows the standardization of internal functions of communication systems by partitioning its internal functions into abstraction layers. There are usually seven layers in total, and these include the physical layer, data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer, and application layer (Grigonis, 2000). It is important that systems conform to the OSI model because to increase the efficacy of communication systems in the healthcare setting.

Overall, the Open Systems Interconnection model has many advantages; therefore, it is the best platform to use in the field. However, all systems should adopt this model to enhance the advantages it can deliver. The OSI model was a major response to the confusion that LANs, MANs, and WANs were causing; the OSI therefore attempted to simplify this interface. The OSI describes how information is transferred from system to system within a network and this is extremely important to the healthcare field because it will help nurses and other healthcare professionals gain a better understanding about the data transfers that occur during the sending of important patient information which will allow them to remain HIPAA compliant.

The advantages that the OSI delivers are reduced network complexity because it is broken down into smaller parts, standardized interfaces to enhance technical and vendor support, it facilitates modular engineering and allows network hardware and software to communicate, it ensures operable technology, it allows the system to be updates without the user interface changing significantly, and it makes learning the system easier (Computer Networking Notes, 2013). Professionals argue that there are really no disadvantages to using this system, so it is recommended that healthcare professionals conform to this model across the board.
