Outcome of the Same Sex Marriage Social Movement, Essay Example

Abstract

The article which was reviewed is titled:  de Vogue, A. & Diamond, J (27 June 2015). Supreme Court rules in favor of the same-sex marriage nationwide. CNN.  The issues that will be reviewed is the social movement toward same sex marriages, the discrepancy between the states and the discrepancy within the United States’ Supreme Court over legalizing same sex marriages.

Same Sex Marriage Social Movement

The White House was illuminated in the colors of the rainbow which is demonstrative of the social movement behind the same sex marriage controversy in the United States. There had been a landmarked judgment between the Supreme Court Justices that had the outcome that couples who have the same sexual gender have the right to marry in any state of the Union.  The Supreme Court ruled in a 5- 4 decision that the states cannot forbid couples of the same gender who wish to enter into a legal matrimonial relationship. Same sex marriages have caused an uproar in the social and legal establishment of the United States. There had been a substantial social movement and small acts of bravery that caused many to realize over the forty-six-year period that the movement has been occurring that love is love, whether it is between heterosexuals or homosexuals (de Vogue & Diamond, 2015).

In addition, prior to the Supreme Court ruling, the amount of states which did not forbid same sex marriages had been thirty-seven. This infers that the social movement that has been taking place over the 46-year history of the fight for equal rights between homosexuals in society has culminated in a change of public opinion. After the public opinion and the social movements caused thirty-seven of the states to ratify same sex marriages, the Supreme Court ruled same sex marriages legal in the entire United States by a margin of 5-4 (de Vogue & Diamond, 2015).

Furthermore, during the prohibition of same sex marriages, there had been a number of couples who challenged the prohibition. The social movement finally reached President Obama three years ago, and President Obama became united with the social movement for the legality of same sex marriages (de Vogue & Diamond, 2015).

 Conclusion

The same sex marriage social movement had been part of a larger movement in society. The larger movement in society sought to attain equal rights and recognition for individuals who are homosexual, lesbian and transvestite. The victory that had been gained with the Supreme court roiling had been the culmination of years of social struggle and legal review.
