History of theoretical development

Patricia Benner provided the theoretical framework for the 5 Stage Model of Mental Activities and Skill acquisition for the nursing profession. This consisted of qualitative research that she carried out at Berkley College, University of California. In 1984 her research was published in the book “ From Novice to Expert: Excellence and power in clinical nursing practice. The theory contained in the book gained rapid recognition for defining the skill levels of nursing and establishing standards and best practices in the nursing profession.

The theoretical model consisted of 5 Stages of skill acquisition in nursing practice:-

Stage 1 – Novice

Stage 2 – Advanced Beginner

Stage 3 – Competent

Stage 4 – Proficient

Stage 5 – Expert
