Patterns to Improve Healthy Hydration, Essay Example

Introduction

The X.Y family consists of a father, FY; mother, ZY; and two children; a boy CY; and a girl VY. From a sociological interpretation of family this could be classified a nuclear structure. They live in one household in an urban community. Father/ husband FY is a mechanical engineer who owns a boat refurbishing company with 20 employees.  He is 39 years old.  Mother/wife ZY is a professional advanced nurse specializing in obstetrics. ZY is 36 years old. Son, CY is 13 years old and attends a renowned high school in the city. Daughter VY is 18 and has just graduated high school. She is enrolled to begin college next semester. After obtaining consent the family was interviewed at their home.

Interview

Values, health perception; In response to the questions; how do you view your family’s health status; what health values you have and what are your perceptions of health ideals set by health care system, father FY articulated an eloquent explanation while the rest of the family listened supporting with approval cues validating the comments made. It was clear that the family’s health values are very high, especially, with mother being in health care. The family was fully insured with dental, vision and specialist services. They kept all doctors’ appointments and visited regularity every month or when scheduled. Children were fully vaccinated. However, even though they believed in scientific medicine this did not deter them from using herbal remedies.

Nutrition:Good nutrition for parents F&Z Y was considered eating food rich in vitamins, which the children did not really like. Also fast food was not welcomed often in the home, but if allowed the teenage children would eat that every day. Consequently, parents ensured that food is cooked at home and the family seldom eats out except if there is a family celebration when  it is mandatory.

Sleep/Rest:The family felt that less thansix hour sleep or rest per day was inadequate, especially, for a hard working mechanical engineer and nurse practitioner. The children felt that sometimes they could go with less, probably because they are younger with  fewerresponsibilities and more energy. Both father and mother explained that at times they can do with more than the required six hours depending on their schedules because they becometired meeting the new day’s tasks is difficult. As such, they keep a strict sleep/rest schedule of bedtime latest 10 o’clock work/school days and 11 o’clock non-working/school days (Schacter, Gilbert, & Wegner, 2009).

Elimination:  The family expressed that their perception of a regular bowel movement was at least once a day. Mother related how drinking copious amounts of water offers a solid easy elimination process without hard stools. Also eating lots of fruits and vegetables facilitated the process. It was further explained that water helps in urination because the body needs water to filter urine so it would not be concentrated. ZY finally remarked that with the use of so many antiperspirants people seldom perspire, but this is an elimination process, which should not be inhibited (Le Bellego, Jean, Jiménez, Magnani, Tang ,& Boutrolle, 2010).

Activity/Exercise: Activities this family consider exercise are  gardening, walking, biking, home chores, playing tennis,and singing. These they perceive as being activities outside of the work routine. Sports that engagethem for which excitement emerges include lawn tennis, bowling; football; basketball and cricket.The father explained that being a mechanical engineer he years for challenges out of his field, which provide opportunities  for using his athletic skills too. These games fulfill this desire.

 Cognitive: Father and mother Y explained that they attend a mind science church and engage in rigorous meditation accompanied by practicing positive thinking. It is the belief that meditation clears the mind and improves cognition while positive thinking keeps the mind pure. Therefore, when articulating problem solving strategies the best outcome for everyone involved is the goal. It is not a selfish individual resolution. As such, clarity of mental status involves memorizing affirmations that will keep the mind attuned to favorable outcomes.

Sensory-Perception:  Mr. FY explained that if people try to get ahead of me in a line surely it gives a feeling of being cheated. In a similar manner if someone stole something from me that same feeling would make me furious. However, my spiritual training taught me no one can take anything away from me that rightfully is mine. This means it must be mine by right of consciousness. Therefore, if someone gets ahead of me in a line it is their privilege by right of consciousness even if I feel cheated. If a loved one gets into trouble the value is to embrace them no matter what it is.

Self-Perception: Each family member outlines qualities describing their uniqueness. They included beauty, skills; integrity, ability to express love among many others. The family identified their strengths as when together goals are achieved through collective efforts. If there is disintegration and family members do not cooperate the greatest weakness is exposed. Importantly, this disunity filters outside of the home and family. If people do not acknowledge my strengths or qualities it does not affect our self-esteem. We know who we are they confirmed.

Role Relationship: Unique roles as father, mother child in this family were explained. Father was expected to be financial provider even though mother is a professional and worked outside of the home also. His function as exclusive financial provider allows mother to pursue her role of nurturing ther family.  Father/dad offered nurturing too, but in a different capability form mother Y. His nurturing was being a solid example of manhood for his son. When each family member executes his/her roles effectively the cohesiveness is felt in this family. Parents teach children how to function as a supportive child by modeling submissiveness and obedience.

Sexuality: In responding to the question what qualities you possess that make you feel sexy, Mr. Y said that his macho figure while Mrs. Y brag about her coco cola bottle figure, which attracted the attention of many men including her husband. Their 13 year old son and 18 year old daughter simply blushed while the parents kept tantalizing each other about their sexiness.  This demonstrated expressed how confident the couples were about their sexuality and the comfort with which it was communicated within this family.

Coping: This family expresses strong belief in a supreme being which is referred to as the one mind, God or spirit. This is the source to which they turn when faced with adversity in the family. Even though parents have both of their parents are alive support is often garnered from their church first before involving family member who do not understand their religious beliefs. Consequently, when a family crisis occurs family members are supported through prayer from the church along with relevant help where necessary.

Conclusion

After interviewing this family and thanking them for their cooperation two wellness diagnoses that can be made pertain first to readiness for enhanced nutritional metabolic pattern.  This is so because the children do not readily accept the nutritional values espoused by the family. A second wellness relate to readiness for enhanced urinary elimination pattern. The family gives full attention to diet ensuring bowel elimination is regular, but the same is not given to urinary elimination(Weber, 2010).
