Performance Assessment, Essay Example

Essay

There are many job opportunities in the field of respiratory therapy especially in the United States and Canada as opposed to other countries in the world. Most other countries have not isolated respiratory therapy from general medical practice and it is split between specialized physiotherapists and nursing practitioners. The ICRC (International Council for Respiratory Care) is the professional body for RTs (Respiratory Therapists) and it is made up of twenty-five countries of which Chile and the United States are members. However, compared to Chile, which is still a developing nation, the United States of America (a developed economy) offers better grounds for the private as well as clinical practice of respiratory therapy. The training and job detail might be the same but the terms and working conditions in both countries differ in various aspects.

In the United States of America, there are many opportunities for expatriates and immigrants to live and work, with job permits, training, and induction into the medical profession (including respiratory therapy). The situation in Chile is very different where national interests are pitted to keep out many medical as well as medicine related professionals. There are certain regions, which lack reciprocal agreements thus interests happen to be rigged specifically to keep out foreign expatriates or what they refer to as outsiders. In Chile it is an uphill task to first break through this exclusion after which one has to be totally competent and fluent in Spanish or what may be viable as Spanish locally. However, in both countries it is possible to freelance as an RT with your country of origin qualifications in the legal channel of working under supervision from qualified RTs in the country you go to work.
