Performance Review of the Dining Room, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 566

Essay

The Dining Room was an interesting performance to watch because it presents a comedic view of the upper class Americans that own a particular set of dining room furniture. It allows the audience to learn more about the families that own in in addition to learning more about the culture of the American upper class. The production was meant to be enjoyed by members of society that do not fall within this social classification, although it appears that some individuals from this walk of life would appreciate some aspects of the play as well.

The play was compelling because the individuals who created it appeared to have though carefully about how members of the upper class would behave, speak, and dress. The costumes were well-fitting for the family members and the conversations were enjoyable, even though the topics discussed by the family members appeared to be foreign and strange at times. In a sense, the performance could be said to be informative even though it was written as a satire. Individuals that are not accustomed to the cultures of these families can gain a greater understanding of the typical lives that these individuals live.

An additional aspect of the production that made it enjoyable was the use of the lighting during the performance. This aspect of the show was very well done because it allowed the audience to focus on the correct family members at the right moment in time. Furthermore, any background movement that the director wanted the audience to notice would be highlighted by the lights, allowing the audience to capture the full message that the show was meant to produce.

While the performance could be considered for audiences of all ages, it is more likely that a mature crowd would enjoy this play. Many of the themes discussed may not be comprehendible by children or those without sufficient critical thinking skills. It seems that the purpose of the play was to enable the audience to engage in deeper thought about its themes after leaving the performance, making it more appropriate for adult intellectual. Despite the overall gearing of the performance towards adults, most children would understand some of the comedic aspects of the work and may therefore enjoy it even though they are not able to understand the greater themes of the play as a whole.

Overall, I would recommend this performance to my friends and family because it had a high level of entertainment value. This type of play is ideal for individuals who enjoy reading the news or hearing about current events because it appears that the dialogue will provide the viewer with a greater understanding of the issues that they read about by presenting it from a different perspective. While I viewed this performance using an online recording, I cannot be certain about the effects that would have been created by the performers if I had viewed it in real life. However, based on what I have seen, it appears that the performance would have been more effective to have viewed in person. While I was able to connect with the message of the performers while viewing the online recording, I believe that this message would have been more effective if I were able to be present at the theater. Therefore, it is likely that I will attend a live viewing of this play if I am ever given the opportunity to do so.
