Essay

The 2007 film Persepolis was written and directed by author Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud. The story takes place during the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and provides her perspective as an individual who grew up in Iran and then later moved to the United States. Contrary to what is commonly believed about politics in the area, there has always been individuals that are highly opposed to the corruption of their governments and Marjane Satrapi is able to provide her own personal account of what it was like to belong to a family that was so fervently in favor of the revolution. Marjane Satrapi showed that women can be strong and was outspoken about her own opinions about the government as well, which led to a series of events that brought her to the United States for safety.

Satrapi found herself in an ironic situation, as the United States was a supporter of the Pahlavi dynasty under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, which was overthrown by revolutionaries. Through her experiences, Satrapi learned that nothing is as it seems at that it is often necessary to make challenging and often confusing situations in order to survive to spread a valuable message. Ultimately, she succeeded in spreading her story when she arrived in the United States as a consequence of the publication of her book and the development of this film by the same name. This film demonstrates that it is important to stay strong in the face of adversity and that adverse situations come in all shapes and sizes.
