Pages: 1

Words: 330

Essay

The most significant civilizations that were mentioned in chapter one to nine are Persian Empire, Babylonian empire and the Quin Dynasty. These empires existed in different times in history. The Quin Dynasty existed between 259-210 B.C.E, the Persian Empire was there in 550-330 B.C.E, while the Babylonian civilization existed 1894-1595 B.C.E.

The power and the strength of these three civilizations came from different factors and achievements. First, the Empires had great leaders who ensured the economic, social, and political situations and standings of their people and empires were greater than that of their neighbours. For example, the City of Babylon in Mesopotamia became the richest city and empire in the world during the reign of Hammurabi. These powers were derived from riches gained from economic activities such as farming on fertile lands and trade with the neighbours. Moreover, they had great armies who conquered their neighbours and hence increasing the overall power and domination on other lands, which would bring extra gains, while expanding the empires.

The empires did expand. For example, located in Asia, Mesopotamia, Babylonian Empire had a size of 500,000 sq. kilometers or 193051 square miles. During the reign of Hammurabi in Babylon, Hammurabi made an alliance with the leader of Larsa when they learned the duplicity of Elamites. Therefore, they were able to crush Elamites. However, Hammurabi contributes greatly on this, the small effort by Larsa angers him, and he turns against Larsa kingdom and eventually gains control of the southern regions and hence dominating the whole of the lower region of Mesopotamia by c. 1763BCE.

The cause for the fall of these empires was natural disasters, wars, diseases, economic disruption, and over population. Other causes were internal causes like over-farming and political instabilities. For example, when King Hammurabi died, Babylon Kingdom declined.

The three Empires mention were the most important as they were the most powerful and were being ruled by powerful and shrewd leaders who ensured the growth the kingdoms, while conquering their neighbors and expanding their lands.
