Essay

It was a sunny Wednesday afternoon in May.Summer temperatures were just beginning to get into the 90s. However, 12: 20 p.m. in a New York City afternoon temperature caused skin surfaces to burn in the day’s heat. At that time the park was filledwith excited children and their exhilarating patients. Soon, the environment was buzzing with chatter anticipating the day’s outcome and awesomeness of planned events.

Participants, while still mingling in the crowd with their protective parents, could feel the moment’s tenseness as the performance time approached. My mother felt me incessantly squeezing her fingers and would not let go of them as we walked across the park meeting other relatives. She introduced me as her little girl. Never did my mother volunteered any information regarding my participation in any of the day’s events scheduled for children my age.

Importantly, it was a family fun day affair and families were not allowed to share thesedetails among themselves regarding participation in the day’s events. If conveners learnt that participants shared any details they could have been disqualified. While the events where not conducted at international standards the promoters functioned within a certain protocol for which parents of participants had to comply by signing a compliance document.

Amidst the day’s rumblings came an announcement, ‘everyone pleasegather around the platform for an opening declarationof the day’s activities.’ The over two hundred persons who assembled to enjoy their community’s family fun day rushed towards the center of the park where county dignitaries began gathering in celebration of the event. Soon after conveners asked parents to gather their children who were participating in the opening ceremony. We were taken to a secret location in the park awaiting our call. All over my body begun developing goose pimples as if the temperature had dropped to zero. My mom griped me tight and with one hand and threw the other across my shoulders.

At thattime she reminded me of my responsibility when delivering an address. Mentally we rehearsed my posture, stage movement, diction when speaking smile techniques in respondingto applauses. These tips were essential in releasing the moment’s anxiety. This strategy enhanced my poise and confidence.

‘This is moment we have been waiting for’ came the announcement, loud for everyone to hear and understand.  ‘Ladies, gentleman, children, dignitaries, let uswelcome our beloved mayor of this beautiful City,’ came the resoundingecho. The entourage followed swiftly behind with police, body guards and other political affiliates. They rushed out of their cars first surrounding the honorable Mayor then escorting him to the stage prepared for dignitaries who werejoining the community’s families on this auspicious family fun day event.

While my heart was skipping beats amidst this ceremony being a participant meeting the mayor for the first time, my body began regaining heat. It would appear that hot flushes were now being experienced. The Mayor and his entourage ascended the platform. They were seated and the masters of ceremony, my father called my name as the person welcoming the Mayor and his party to our family fun day event. My three sisters along with four other family member’s children emerged from our hiding exquisitely clad in carnival colored/designed costumes and dancing to the stage.

The crowd cheered us un forming a column for us to pass through on our way. Everyone on the stage stood in recognition of our entry and cheered until their palms hurt. After this resounding applause I said my welcoming poem designed, especially, for the Mayor and then his entourage. Upon completion the Mayor shook my hand and all of us who run to the stage. He referred to us as pretty little angels. As the end of the event we were awarded special scholarships for our participation in the event. Words were simply inexplicable to express my sentiments on receiving such commendation from a City’s Mayor.
